I've got a trip planned to SF this month. Arriving on the 15th, will spend that weekend with my daughter and son-in-law (including that Bay to Breakers thing, which sounds, uh ... like it will present interesting photographic opportunities). Then off to a dog show Monday late afternoon through Friday; back to the daughter's Friday night till I head home on Saturday the 22nd.
Which leaves a nice gap on Monday the 17th for some sort of photo opportunity. Anybody around and want to play tour guide? I will have a car, and would love to go off and shoot some of CA's natural wonders within reasonable driving distance. I'll be starting from Redwood City and need to make it to Pleasanton by late afternoon or early evening Monday. Clueless about traffic in that neck of the woods so advice on that sort of thing welcome along with suggestions for places to shoot, even if no one has time on a weekday to join me.
Thanks for any help :-) |

On Monday, if leaving from Redwood City in the morning, the first thing which comes to mind is to take Highway 92 West (it runs through San Mateo, a few miles to the north) out to Highway 1 and the Half Moon Bay area -- there are lighthouses at Pigeon Point and Montara, and several nice beaches in each direction along the coast. If you have all day you can loop to the north through Pacifica and San Francisco, or to the south through Santa Cruz and San Jose ... the drive up Highway 9 from Santa Cruz to Los Gatos goes through a coastal redwood forest, or if you don't want to go that far south you can take the Pescadero-La Honda Road from Highway 1 almost directly back to Redwood City.
For a different perspective you can take Edgewood Road from Redwood City up to Interstate 280 ... the drive south towards San Jose will take you past the Crystal Springs Reservoirs, which store San Francisco's drinking water supplu as delivered from the Hetch Hetchy dam up in the Sierras -- it comes out at the Pulgas Water Temple, but I don't know if that's open to the public anymore.
If you search the Out and About section for San Francisco or Bay Area you should find several threads with recommended photo-ops in the area.
I might be able to do something early (10-2 -- the worst light!) if you want to come to the East Bay, but I have to be out in Concord a little before 3.

Thanks for the info; I'm still planning so I'll let you know if I can manage an early meetup, despite the bad light ;-)
Anybody else have a suggestion or two? |

It's looking like I will try to hit Half Moon Bay with the "kids" after they pick me up at the airport Saturday (maybe with a short side trip to Purisima Creek to see some redwoods). On Monday I'm thinking of heading up to Point Reyes since it looks like an amazing place for all kinds of sights, including CA wildlife. Assuming I'll still be partly on East Coast time I expect to head up there pretty early and stay till late afternoon. Company welcome for all or part of that expedition!
I may sneak away from the dog show for some sightseeing later in the week, but we'll see. Haven't been to CA since I was a kid, so I'm getting pretty excited about this :-) |

If you are going from SFO to Redwood City via Half Moon Bay, then you can take the (winding) road from Pescadero through La Honda through coastal redwood and oak forest instead of Highway 92. There are also redwoods at Muir Woods more or less "on the way" to Pt Reyes. |
