I have a friend ( kitkat1294) that has been approached by a local businessman to purchase some of her photos.

She is still in high school and is planning on going to college in Boston, MA. for Photography. Will her selling these prints possibly help/hurt her in receiving college scholarships or grants? Can anyone give us any advice for her?

Thanks in advance.

Nathan

i doubt it. i haven't read the language on any applications, but i don't think this would be treated the same way a amateur athlete would be treated by the NCAA if the athlete had received money for playing sports.

might be best to talk to a college admissions person if her guidance counselor can't help.

I am not an expert on this, but I have had some experience dealing with college expenses for my kids, and this is my understanding:

Scholarshps/grants for college tend to be of two varieties -- financial-need based and merit based. Amateur/professional is rarely if ever an issue for anything other than sports, as already indicated by Skip.

For financial-need based ones, the calculations are based typically on parents income/wealth + students income/wealth vs tuition/room/board/expenses. I doubt that selling a few prints will change this equation by much.

For merit based ones, having sold some prints while still in high school would certainly be a feather in her cap, not only for merit based scholarships/grants but also for admission to the photography programs at the colleges of interest.

Edited for spelling
