I'm sorry to hear that you felt the need to stop commenting; I am glad that you enjoy the site still-and or more..but...it saddens me that you cant enjoy it as much as you do now while expressing your views/opinions/thoughts-
perhaps we will be fortunate and you will begin commenting again and give it another go! :-) *i can hope right?* :-D the thought of less people commenting just makes me go 'aw...'

I wish there was a box to check on each entry saying "I welcome all comments", or that there was some way to know who wants/doesn't want the opinions of others. I love getting comments, but rarely leave them anymore because I have received some negative feedback. |

It's been suggested before. Many times. I am hopeful that it is on the short list for the near future. |

Oh come on Jac.. That's only 0.1%, 1 in 1000... You seriously gave up commenting because of what 0.1% of the recipients said?
No offense meant here, but I'm shocked that such a small percentage would have such a large effect on you. |

I think it should be like a little red text under the scoring # piece that says 'this photographer has requested an in depth critique' (ie from the critique club therefore they are open to comments/critique from everyone) that way when ppl click 'check' for indepth critique-- it'll just default show up that they want it; then they don't have to add more boxes...just a script that says 'if checked add txt here... on challenge vote page' ;) |

I was initially hesitant about commenting but I figured as long as I make it clear it is IMHO and don't state what I think as a "fact" then all would be well... so far so good :)
Also I vastly prefer getting comments good bad or ugly to none at all!
The only ones I don't mark as helpful are the few that either don't make any sense at all, I can't read because they aren't in english and I'm to lazy to translate, or the ones that state something I disagree with like it is a fact. If it is something I disagree with but the commenter is saying how they feel then of course I mark it as helpful.
Anyway here are my comment stats.
Comments:
Made: 162
Helpful: 131
Received: 205
Helpful: 185 |

I appreciate comments cuz it lets me know what ppl -think- i did or how i shot the image etc... its good to talk with the commenter if they are open to hearing what you have to say about your image and or open to a response to their comment/thoughts...; ie: no i did not use a blur filter, but its an interesting perspective you bring up etc... or no i didn't convert it to B&W that is how it was shot in camera... can you elaborate as to why you think it looks such and such... it would help me to know etc..etc... its good for the commenter to know that sometimes the thought that immediately pops to their mind of how its done isnt always 100% and its good for the one being commented on to know that that is what comes to most peoples minds (whatever commenter says) -- it keeps the balanc.....

Umm.....
There already is a checkbox for that during your entry's voting period.....
Check this box if you're interested in having your
image critiqued by a member of the DPC Critique Club
I realize that only you see it, but still.....do you check that one now?

She was saying that when you check that particular checkbox, it also shows to the voters that you have checked it. That would indicate to the voters that you are open for their critiques as well. |

I can read......if you look at what I wrote, I'm well aware that the checkbox is only viewable to the CC & the entrant.....My point was, is she utilizing this option NOW?

Love6, you say that photography is art on your profile page. Photography is just a means to record art for later viewing, nothing more. It's not the camera that creates the art, it's you. Cameras are recorders and what they do is called photography. jmo
Oh and this thread sucks big time! From the title to the content. This site is a magnet for people who are starting in photography, lots of new people join everyday. In all their excitement they jump onto the commenting bandwagon and make their comments, according to their knowledge, about the photos they are viewing that may have been taken by another newcomer to photography or a seasoned DPC pro. They know no better and that's not a bad thing. They leave comments about lighting, focus, movement, shadows, etc. but most have no clue what the photographer was trying to achieve. They give advice that may be useful to another newcomer but to the DPC pro it may seem like they're trying to give advice on how to improve their image and photography, which to many DPC pros is insulting and maddening, as LVicari has demonstrated.
You DPC pros should take into consideration that this site is not here for the exclusivity of you and your images, it's meant as a stepping stone to better our photography. Maybe you've grown out of this site and need more challenges elsewhere where more experienced photographers hang out? Maybe not. I do not know but one thing I do know is that receiving boring comments is part of what DPC is and it will not change unless the site owners lock the doors and stop letting newcomers to photography enter DPC. Then you'll all share the same thoughts and experiences and you will all vote in a similar style with no one complaining about; If I hear these comments one more time...
coryboehne, yes it took three nasty PMs for me to call it quits. I do not care how mathematically this computes, I only care about having my time wasted by some angry PMs and the anxiety it creates. I don't even vote anymore although I'm hoping to start once again after the motivation returns, if indeed it does. Being accused of being a troll is something I can't digest and maybe never will because I know how this site's members and users think now.
Low votes are from trolls and high votes are from knowledgeable people. <--- this is DPC, from what I'm reading in the scoring threads. It's become a ritual to put scoring threads on ignore right after they pop up after rollover, I just can't stand the stupid comments in those threads, truly maddening and the biggest turn off for me on this site. Scoring threads should be deleted as soon as the negative comments begin. They serve no purpose except to flaunt our scores.

I haven't read the entire thread, just the OP. One of my early images on DPC that I spent a lot of time on got hammered not by one or two troll 1 voters but by a large percentage of regulars. Whilst I got a HM I felt I was cheated out of a ribbon by many who disliked the motion blur I created intentionally in the image.
It got more comments during voting and more views after rollover than the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place.
I was happy with the HM but I learned a hard lesson about formula shooting. I won't do it to achieve a result.
I now, where possible, try and comment as loosely as I see the image, flares, contrast, over-saturation as I see it, not as some textbook will have me want.

Those are the rules for doing portraits at the mall studio. Nothing wrong with having rules, but apply them where they are salient, you wouldn't tell a race car driver he/she must signal before changing lanes. |

You forgot to add grain. : ) Honestly, I think we are all sick of seeing certain things (my personal beef is water glasses, water drops, the same children, etc), but I try to look past that and judge the image by the quality I see. I do prefer natural lighting! Art is in the eye of the beholder. I'm still going to comment and that's the way the cookie crumbles! (you do like crumbs don't you?) lol |
