argh, Deb! What have you done?

I've started commenting, and my comments are ending up more as essays, and I'm afraid that people aren't going to like them because they're about what doesn't work for me.

Well, I took the challenge (sorta) and commented on 10%, though I have time for more. I also find that that majority of my comments are "constructive". It's actually hard to comment on images that I cannot fault the artists' intent or result, though the occasional "Wow!" will slip out...

I don't have time to comment on every photo, but I will say that I'm seeing a lot of overuse of the Topaz filter (especially in the sky) and a lot of darker photos - not enough separation in the tonalities. For what it's worth... ;)

Nothing wrong with that at all. Everyone should be happy to get some early tips for B&W Landscapes II, right?

Pick my row... I still only have one comment.

I'm going to start my commenting today.

Great job, peeps! And pleased to see a couple folks posting here and elsewhere that the "pick 38 in a row" is hard! It is. It is much easier to just comment on the ones you like, isn't it? Or the ones that are way too small, or have some other glaring flaw. It's much harder to say, nicely, "this just doesn't do anything for me." Then while you look at it to think of a nice way to say that, you may something more. If everyone does something like 10% in a row, then there's a good chance everyone will get one or two useful comments, and a bit longer view of their photograph from at least one voter.

So thanks, folks! Pleased to see this caught on.

I still have a few more to break 100 for comments but I do have to say that it was an enjoyable challenge for me to vote.

Done! I started with the very first image and commented on the first 38. And I've numbered them just for fun. Now to vote on 38 more...

Well, I have commented more on this challenge than I have done in a long time. I don't think my comments are particularly helpful as I rarely suggest ways to improve things for a couple of reasons .. I don't know what kind of camera they have, what software they are using and landscapes are not the sort of photography I do much of. I cannot take credit for not skipping a few as I truly couldn't come up with anything other than a banal good job or nice .. and I honestly tried to. I made a few suggestions that I hope were helpful and I must say that there are a lot of very talented landscape photographers on this site. Thanks Deb for moving me out of my comfort level.

Can you do the bottom 38 - that's where I must be because I'm not getting any comments.

Yeah, that looks rough (?!).

It's been a while since I forced myself to comment on all the mid range votes I left. It's not easy to make yourself figure out the reasons on everything.

Average should go up after I do my final adjustments... but it's about my average overall.

Most of my comments were on my lower scored shots since I wasn't thinking and voted first. :)

One more "challenge" for you guys - I used to do this all the time but haven't done it for quite awhile...

When the challenge is over, comment on the entries from the people who commented on yours during the challenge. Nice way to say thanks!
05/02/2010 10:49:56 PM · #73
I commented on 43 in a row, without skipping. It was hard because I sometimes had to sit there and really look deeply to have a comment that was constructive without sounding like a snob or sounding rushed in the comment.

ETA: It's a good idea to comment (post challenge) on people's shots who gave comments to us during the challenge if theirs wasn't one of the ones we'd already commented on during the challenge. I'm going to try to do that as well. Then again, there will be some who have commented but, not entered.

Unfortunately these were not at one sitting and I voted on some before I realized that would compromise the row idea. But each time I commented, I picked an arbitrary starting point and went on from there.
Post challenge? ... well I'd still like to hear from anyone else so I guess I should reciprocate (but I've only got 4 comments!)
