Ok, I was volunteer by my husband to take some pictures of a friend's son and date for prom. She wants them at the park and will also use some in his graduation announcements.
What lens should I use? They'll want full length as well as portrait I'm sure! AND it's my first gig so I"m super nervous!!!! :S The sky is clear and it's sunny. Will be shouting about an hour before sunset.

I have a 50mm 1.4, 100mm2.8, 70-200mm 2.8, 17-40mm 1.4 and the ol' 28-105mm junk lens.

I do have an external flash, but no diffuser as everyone was out when I went to purchase today. (found all this out two days ago!) I'm doing this for free, but would still like to do a nice job for her. They will not have anything else.

I would use my 70-200 to kill the backgrounds. Shoot at 70 and back for full length, then zoom with your feet and the lens for tight shots. Either that or use the 50 F1.4 and zoom it all with your feet. I shoot nearly all of my outdoor portraits with my 70-200 though.

Those were the two I was thinking of...when you say zoom w/feet I assume you mean leave on 70 and just step up or back. :)
Do I dare use the flash with no diffuser if necessary? I have it set on ETTL and I've not done a thing to it.

Watched a Gary Fong video and he says he shoots in P mode, ETTL on flash and uses the fastest the flash will go (??)

I shot full length at 70mm and back myself up to frame how I want the rest. But I will zoom both with my feet and my lens sometimes to 200 to really blow out the background.

As far as Flash, I rarely use mine on camera anymore, but when I do I set it to ETTL and fire a shot and look at whether it's overpowering or not. All I want my flash to do is fill in. I'd prefer to shoot in AV mode if you aren't comfortable with full manual and move your ISO up and down to keep your shutter speed around 1/200 or so.
