Matthew, you have ignored the reason God wanted to initiate the communication factor. I think they wanted to build a tower to heaven and God was again it.

Lemme see... Everyone spoke a common language, seemingly got along fine, and decided to build a tower to the "Heavens", presumably to be closer to god or maybe even as a tribute to a supreme being, and god was against it... so he put the kibosh on it.

Yep, makes perfect sense.

Actually it makes perfect sense, within the context of the Old Testament God of the Hebrews. He was a wrathful God. He struck them down for daring to presume that they could get to heaven without Him. For what the Greeks called hubris. It's an old, old theme.

While I can fully appreciate what it is you are saying Robert, could it be that we are working on mere supposition as it relates to god's intents in this instance. There exists no undisputed facts relating to the exact date that this tower was built, yet the scholars of the day know what god's intent were and that the builders simply wanted to bypass god...very interesting.

Perhaps I am being naive, but is it not possible that they simply wanted to get closer to their god and that the scholars have it all wrong.

That's neither here nor there, Ray. It's a Bible story, the Bible is fairly explicit about what they did that pissed God off, it's pretty simple. Is it *accurate*? Who the heck knows, and really, who cares. Was there even, in reality, such a tower? If there was, did it come down through faulty engineering or via the wrath of God? Who knows?

But, in the context of this discussion, all we need to know is the nature of the Hebrews' God of Wrath, as depicted in the Old Testament. I don't see where any of the rest of it is germane.

Accurate? ROFL! Far older temples surely existed on mountaintops for the exactly same purpose, and we've since constructed vastly taller structures with little "risk" of reaching heaven. The story only makes sense within the context of ancient people who believed heaven actually existed as a physical place that could be reached with enough altitude (like Mt. Olympus), and I think we can all agree that's a myth. If not, there should have been throngs of devout protestors trying to stop every manned rocket launch for fear of getting too close to God.

Even as a lesson, the story is absurd. By the time the engineering technology required to construct such a tower existed, humans had already developed diverse languages from the Americas to Asia. It makes no sense that people who spoke the same language would suddenly speak different languages in groups, and ZERO sense that a god who communicated through ancient texts would want to render his Word unintelligible!

At one time that question, among its variants, were the only ones uttered. Now it's one among many, a sure indication that the end of this dark age is near.
