An excellent use for old textbooks! (One of the examples posted.)

âThis is an urban legend that has been around for decades. According to my brother who works in the post office, such stunts donât even make it through the first sort. In other words, postal employees recognise what is going on and quietly remove such parcels from the system.â

That's my take on it too. No way the post office is gonna let this happen, it's BS. But it sounds good :-)

But, there's nothing wrong with taking all the letters, applications, order forms and other junk, and (making sure nothing still has your name and address on it) sending THAT back in the envelope, just as they request you to do. After all, I'm sure forgetting to fill out the forms was just an oversight ... ;-)

I wonder how soon the Post Office will have accumulated enough bricks to build a branch office ...

Instructions:
1. Open "Junk Mailer A" envelope and separate the contents from the prepaid envelope.
2. Open "Junk Mailer B" envelope and separate the contents from the prepaid envelope.
3. Put "Junk Mailer A" contents in "Junk Mailer B" prepaid envelope.
4. Put "Junk Mailer B" contents in "Junk Mailer A" prepaid envelope.
5. Mail "Junk Mailer A" contents to "Junk Mailer B".
6. Mail "Junk Mailer B" contents to "Junk Mailer A"

Now they will know what it feels like!

The only problem with these tactics is that, while the materials are 100% post-consumer waste, the fuel to ship them all over the country has to be burned all over again.

The Post Office can use the revenue, I don't think they would complain as much money they lost lately.

I know but let me tell you what happened to me in the last few weeks.

My youngest son is disabled and about to turn 18 yr old. He was on SSI but in 2006 they put him on SSA until he turns 18. So I had to let them know in March that he was about to turn 18 so they decide if they need to leave him as an adult on SSA or convert him back to SSI.

I went to the local SS office and filled out all the forms. I was told we would receive their decision within 4 months.

About three weeks ago I get four large questionnaires in the mail; two from SSA and two from SSI. Both asking the same questions I had already filled out at the local office. The weird thing is the two questionnaires for both SSA and SSI was the same. Why did each send me two?

I completed all four and send back in a prepaid envelope.

A week later I get two more letters from both, each letter the same telling me when his doctors appointment will be.

And last week I received three letters from SSA in one day. One telling me again when his doctors appointment would be. The second, reminding me of his appointment. And the third reminding me that they had sent me a reminder, reminding me of his appointment that I received via mail a week before.

How much fuel did the government waist :P

Kinda like the census. We got a letter telling us to expect it. We got the census. Then, we got another letter telling us we had gotten it. . . .

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed it!

I'm just waiting for the one that says they got it back.

The census stuff didn't make sense to me at first either. I heard an actual explanation from a government official on the Daily Show (seriously) that explains why it isn't nonsense. Those letters are sent out because it has been determined that it increases the response rate immensely, and this way, they don't have to send out people to go verify stuff, which is WAY more expensive.

ETA: It was Gary Locke, Secretary of Commerce

The first part of the interview, with some other census info is here

And I know everyone seen all the commercial about sending the census back as soon as possible.

After receiving a census letter telling me they would be mailing my census form.
Then receiving my census form.
I put the census form in my mailbox and flagged my mail for the postman for pick up.
It sat in my mailbox for three days as the postman passed my house.
On the forth day I got in the car an went to the post office and mailed it myself.
Then received a reminder on the fifth day (Saturday) to fill out my census and mail back asap.

When my census was in my mailbox flagged and didn't get picked up I called my annex station and they told me, "The postman is not required to pick-up any mail you have in your box, even if flagged, unless he/she has mail to be delivered. The ones that do, do it out of courtesy." This did not sound right to me so I called the national post office and I was told the same thing. So I called the census department and told them they may want to add that to their TV and Radio commercials if they want their census forms back as soon as possible.

And on Monday I received another census form. I called them and told them that they had sent me another census form but I had already put it in the mail. I was told by them, "We ship out more than on census form to a percentage of households at random because of the percentage of mail that don't get delivered by the post office." Even the census department knows how the post of operates. lol
