Which PS filters would you recommend for imitating shallow DOF?

Gaussian blur with a series of feathered selections. It's tricky.

Lens blur is supposed to be for that.

I glanced through it also -- seems OK. You might also want to look at the DPC Tutorials on Layer Masks (if you're not familiar with saving/modifying selections) and on making "Fake Miniatures" -- it simulates a slightly different form of shallow DOF look, when your subject is situated part-way back into the scene, and you have both fore- and background elements to modify. Applied "less aggressively" than in the tutorial should give a relatively natural looking shallow DOF effect.

Yup. I'm using it more often lately and it works really well, I just wish the interface would be smoothed out more for more options when creating the selection. Like being able to bend it.

I find using featured selections makes it tricky so I avoid them. Well except when making the blur fade from foreground to background but that's like the last step. The rest is sharp masks and little touchups to make the blur flush with the sharp edges.

I was thinking more of a software solution. Like Nik or onOne. Any preferences?

Alien Skin's "Bokeh" looks very, very good to me. But it's expensive, at $200.

There's also Depth of Field Pro that comes in at $100. I haven't tried it but the free plugins from Rosenman's site are pretty decent.
