I did not know where exactly to put this thread so I thought I would put it here...
I am ranting towards my photography professor here at my school. Today I was scheduled to do my presentation for "lens" (Talked about here)
I was basically screwed because he did not bring his computer for me to show my presentation. He proceeded to blame me for not informing him about it so that he could bring it in. I was asking 2 days prior about how I could do my presentation so I would say this is not my fault... That being said I would like to thank each and every one of you who has made me into photography so much over the past few years and this is why...
As it was said in the thread linked above, the maximum amount of time I was supposed to present was 10 minutes. Without taking breath I rattled off 24 minutes of info off the top of my head. I was talked to after the class by my professor and he told me that I was going to get a low grade because I was not ready for my presentation and I took to much time. I proceeded to get very angry with him and started to plea my case. After about 20 minutes of arguing with him he asked me this... "How do you know so much about photography?" I laughed and without hesitating I said... "DPC"
He still did not give me a good grade but at this point I don't care anymore, I could have passed the class with my eyes shut.
So again I wanted to thank you all for keeping me here and making me learn so dang much! :) |

Great story. Thanks for sharing that. Sorry the prof was so difficult about it, but you had a great answer. I wonder if he looked up this site to see what you were talking about? |

I don't think he would have. He was more angry at me for making him sound like an idiot than worried about how I knew so much. I might have been a bit rude to him in front of the class by rudely asking if he got all the info I said after I had finished. I was very upset and I am not the type of person to take stupidity lightly... Oh well I got my point across and he knows it.

Yea, not a good idea to cross a professor, regardless of how right you think you are and how wrong he is. He's the guy in charge of your grade and the college will back him up. Oh well, it's a life lesson, right? |

At this point I could care less. I don't need to the class for my major. I was taking it because I thought maybe I would learn more (which I didn't). Oh well, only a few more weeks.

Where did you say this professor's village is? |

He lives near me so I dont think you can burn his village without burning mine... Sorry Art, put the matches down. :P

Sounds like you had a tough gig. But don't in your irritation overlook one thing you could usefully learn from all this: being concise and keeping to time are prized skills that will serve you well in life if you can master them. It is far harder to keep to ten minutes than to talk for 24 minutes.

He taught you one other thing, albeit in a shitty way. Don't depend on anyone else for a final presentation. If your grade, pay, or reputation is at stake, no one cares about how you end up as much as you do. You're the one who had the vested interest in how this came out, and what he taught you by being a scumbag about it was that you should have brought your own computer.
My wife had a prof like that in college......it sucks when it happens, but someday down the road, you'll realize that things worked out okay, and he's still a petty little man teaching.

I will disagree with you Matthew, I have found those that have the gift of gab will succeed further in life, then others who choose their words carefully. |

As I pointed out in the original thread, the big challenge was to keep within the ten minutes. 24 minutes without slides translates to 45 minutes with slides... Ten minutes is barely long enough to get the main points across for any topic in a clear manner. |

The powerpoint presentation mantra: 10/20/30. 10 slides, 20 minutes, nothing smaller than 30 point font.
And I'll disagree with Alan. Better to remain silent and have people think you a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt. :)

A motto I live with, and will never truly succeed because of! |

...unless of course they are considering a career in politics, the diplomatic corps or strive to become hostage negotiators... and in the latter case the ensuing results can be rather dramatic.

Keeping to time doesn't preclude being silvertongued - but failing to keep to time can appear unprofessional. It will often count against you.

If photography is your passion the grade won't matter. Clients look at your portfolio, not your diploma. I made two different college professors look like idiots (they were), and it worked out in my favor both times. The first was a classic that got a standing ovation from the class, a very red-faced professor, and an A. In the second case, the dean just gave me credit for the entire course after three classes and let me skip it since I knew the material better than the guy teaching it. ;-) |
