I did a lot of messing with my entry for Three. I actually added the grain that quite a few people complained of, as well as the dodged the highlights (the idea behind this was to give the idea of harsh footlights). I was really going for a "Faded Glory" kind of idea but didn't call it that because I wanted to make it clear there were three roses in the shot. I guess I should have trusted the voters.

Anyway, here is a far less tarted up version of my entry. All I did to this was adjust the auto levels and added a bit of yellow in the color balance to warm up the lighting. Should I have entered this one? Would it have made that much difference. This did way worse than I expected. Before submitting, I consulted with my daughter who has a good eye and she liked the grainy shot. Should I just stick by my creative choices and not cave to popular opinion? This isn't typically my kind of shot so I'm not as sure of my own judgement.

Actual entry which finished at 19th %.

You should definitely stick by your creative choises and have your own style :)
But well I think that your far less tarted up version is much better :o
I personally think that the grain ruins it a lot,
Its a nice shot and good lighting :)

Well, ordinarily I would stick my creative choices but this still-life is such a different kind of shot for me that I am willing to be flexible and admit I have much to learn. :D I chose the grain to achieve an effect that I obviously failed to achieve since it was universally disliked by those who liked and did not like the shot. I think I should have allowed the beat-up pointe shoes and wilted blossoms tell the story.

Thanks for the feedback. As always, it's appreciated.

I much prefer the re-done shot, since that kind of photo lends itself to that soft glow light effect. However, that soft glow light effect is one of the biggest cliches in all of photography and obviously goes against your particular style. Even though I would probably never take any of the pictures you do, that's exactly what I find interesting about them.

You are one of the few photographers on this site who actually has a style all her own. While I'm busy taking center-focused closeups of flowers, you are continuing to develop your style and creative insights. If you view the world as noisy and full of high contrast, then I say show us all exactly what you see and don't pay too much heed to those who don't appreciate it. It's a good thing this site wasn't around when Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock were painting or they would have gotten slammed in the ratings. ;-)

Of course, you want feedback to help you increase your knowledge and improve your ability, But only you can be the ultimate judge of what makes a good photo for your particular style and world view. Good luck!

Thanks so much! That response made my night! I think the photo no matter how you look at it is a cliche...;-D My husband immediately said it looked like something that would be hanging in a college girl's dorm room. Many years ago he cleaned dorm rooms for a living so he would know.
My daughter looked at it and said, "Faded glory, right?" She is only 14 but she can be cynical as hell. :-D
