Good luck mate.
Those who do this sort of thing should serve at minimum one year in jail when caught. |

A quick way of removing this threat.
Start in safe mode, press F8 on boot up.
Once in safe mode try and go to system restore, start - accessories - system tools - system restore.
With the system restore box up click onrestore to a earlier time and then select a date back about a month if possible. then click restore. This can take several minutes to do this. Once it starts up again it is extremely important you do the windows updates, open browser and go tools windows update. If this is not done you will almnost certainly reinfect your system. Your computer should now be free of the infection.
A better antivirus software is Microsoft security essentials, it is performing better than most paid antivirus softwares.

Thanks for the recommendation of the Microsoft Security Essentials program Steve. I uninstalled AVG and installed the Microsoft program and was surprised at how much faster my whole system runs now! I didn't realize AVG was slowing down my computer so much. I just did a Quick scan now and tomorrow start daily full scans. Thanks again! :-) |

Look here. This page will describe what it is, and how to remove it. Use the manual removal process. Be careful when you remove the registry values. I cannot vouch for the link on this page for the automatic removal process, though it may be sound.
ETA: FWIW, I got to that page by typing "resident shield alert" in Google. It was the second result.

In cases one malware program gets installed, it's not at all uncommon to have more that follow it. It's important to determine why they are getting on there. If your internet connection has no security, that's one thing you need to address. Others are user security (not being logged in as an administrator during normal use) and user education (don't install *any* tool or program without knowing what it is).
For this latest infection, there is most likely someone out there who has published a process for getting rid of it. If you can clearly identify it, then search for a removal process from a different PC, and use the process on the infected PC, while the infected PC is disconnected from the net. Once you are sure that you have security measures in place, and the machine remains infection-free while disconnected, reconnect it. |

I've never seen Malwarebytes Anti-Malware fail to find something like this unless it's out of date. It's possible you're not on the latest version or definition database. Check the about tab and make sure you're on version 1.45. Next, go to the update tab and click Check for Updates. Make sure it grabs the latest update and tells you it was successful. As of this writing the latest database version is 3984. It's not uncommon for multiple updates to come out in a single day, so you'll probably end up with something newer than that. Next click on the scanner tab and choose the Perform Quick Scan option. This shouldn't take much more than 15-20 minutes. If you want it to complete much faster delete your temporary internet files first.
Good job! You may now disregard this post. :)

Hi Josh,
i work in IT for a living and for what it's worth, I have found that in my experience it is usually best to save any files that you can't lose to an external source and just wipe the hard drive and start from scratch.

1. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del
2. Click the "processes tab in the windows that opens (task manager)
3. Find an unusually titled process you are not familiar with such as, Zwunzi.exe or Ohlrwef.exe
4. Go to C;\Widnows\System32 and find the name of that process, select it
5. Now hit Shift+Del and it should be removed without having to go through the trash.
6. End the process in the task manager
7. Go to Start>Run type "msconfig" and hit OK
8. Click teh startup tab in teh widnow that opens, and makesure the name of your trojan horse isn't there, if it is, uncheck it.
This will remove most trojans, you just have to be able to identify it out of a list of processes. If you cant figure it out, post your process list (Crtl+Alt+Del, processes tab) and message me with the names. I will be able to tell you what virus you have. I'd love to help, I've had MANY trojans before...

download Spybot serach and destory
Run it

that sounds like maybe the drive letter was removed, have you tried going into disk management for that? |

depends how you look at it, Windows gets hacked more because it is so omnipresent, but in a heads up contest, mac os gets hacked first:

I have had to clean up some nasty infections on macs lately, not as easy as pcs to clean as there is not a lot of antivirus software out there for macs.
Re the drive letter missing, this is quite common with some of the trogens. If you can't reloaded your system from clean try setting up a new user and scan from there. A clean reload of system is the best way. I do up to a dozen a day and know from bitter experience cleaning in most cases may get rid of the bug but the system will not run at its best. Third party cleaners etc can help but often cause more problems because users not understanding what they are changing or deleting. |

I currently use AVG Free and Malwarebytes.
Would you advise removing AVG and going with the Microsoft one instead?
Have downloaded but want to be sure before I removed AVG.
Thanks
I don't tend to use my desktop to cruze the net that much.
I have an ooold laptop that runs Ubuntu which I use for more net viewing and banking.

Just want to confirm to move across the Microsoft before doing it. |
