Inattention almost cost me a DQ. All of you Mac users out there no doubt appreciate the convenience of iPhoto (or iView if you're so inclined) for sorting through your shots. I typically download straight to iPhoto, pick out a few potential candidates for a Challenge, and maybe crop or rotate to get a better look. Then I duplicate the shot and work on that one in Photoshop. If proof of validation is requested, I just go back to iPhoto and hit the "revert to original" command, then export that image for uploading.

Well, guess who forgot to duplicate the photo before editing? I must have opened the file in Photoshop, done a quick levels adjustment, and absentmindedly hit 'save,' overwriting iPhoto's original. I requested an admin note to preempt all the predicted DQ requests, but my original wasn't original anymore and was promptly rejected. I used a flash media recovery tool, scoured my hard drive, and thankfully found the original (now validated). Turns out that I had done the same thing on my Waiting entry, but that one was recoverable off the Flash card.

I would never intentionally do anything against the rules (it's a virtual ribbon, for crying out loud), but I was really disgusted with myself for creating a situation that almost resulted in a DQ out of my own stupidity. Many thanks to the SC for their patience while I was floundering about- I'm sorry for the trouble! Let this be a lesson to others: pay attention to what you're doing... you can never be too careful!

Oooh... can I make this post any longer? Blah, blah, blah...

Hi Shannon. I believe that iPhoto, by default, makes a duplicate of the original photo for you in the Pictures>iPhoto Library folder inside your User folder. If you lose an original, you might find it in there.

To make sure I never lose an original, I have a folder called DPC Challenges that I copy all of my potential contest entrants into and just work on those, which is what it sounds like you were trying to do as well. I also have a firewire drive that automatically backs up everything in my Pictures folder every day at midnight and at each startup, so it's harder for me to lose anything important. Thanks, Iomega!

You are correct, to a point, and I was complacent in thinking I could always just go back to iPhoto's original. If you right-click to open a photo in an external editor (PS), and then hit Save while in Photoshop, it will write over the original and iPhoto can only go back to the PS version. I just wasn't paying attention.
