Would you buy a D700 now, or wait for the next version (e.g., D800). I don't give a darn about video, but am curious about other features / improvements to come.
FYI, yesterday Amazon was selling the D700 for $2,394.54 -- that's like $1,000 less than the original price. Today the price has jumped to $2,699.99 (technically, Amazon is out and they are linking to other sellers).

Nope, I'd wait, in fact I will wait:) D700 is just too similar to D300. If you have FX lenses, then you are okay, but if you have DX lenses, then you are buying a 5Mp DSLR. I don't use video either, if I want it, I'll buy a camcorder. |

12Mp, should have been at least 18Mp. Even my D90 is 12Mp? HD video? So what? |

Mostly I'm looking for the increased low-light (high ISO) capability. I also think there may be some improved clarity with the larger sensor.

Better image quality, hands down, no comparison? High ISO performance? Full Frame?
eta: I've owned 2 D300's and now a D700. Trust me on this one.

The D700 has a MUCH better low light/high ISO image than the sibling D300

I am waiting . . . wanting to see what the next D700x / D800 offers and then weigh it out. |

I never owned the D300 (went from D200 to D700) but the low light performance on the D700 is AMAZING. IMHO. I have had so much fun with it. That's why I wanted this camera and I have not been disappointed at all with its performance. Haven't even played with the video, though I'll get around to it eventually.
I did want to wait till the price dropped but Santa jumped in and got it for me. I am not sorry ;-) I may want more megapixels eventually but I can see being happy with this camera for several more years just because of its performance. |

I had a lot of fun taking existing-light photos at my nephew's wedding last summer, with my D300's ISO cranked up and my 85mm fast lens, but it gave me limited flexibility. I hope to do the same at my niece's wedding this year, and thought the high ISO capability would be a boon. |

With the low light improvements Nikon has made on the D3s, it might be worth waiting to see if that transitions over to the next incarnation of the D700.
Saying that though, the D700 low light is, like others say, amazing. I took this shot at ISO2500:

I've been asking myself the same question but with the hope that a "D400" might come out some day so that I don't have to get rid of all my DX lenses!
Is it possible that the next generation dx camera can even come close to the D700 (noise-wise)?? |

Was wondering the same thing myself, especially since I am in NYC in June and will likely visit the mecca known as B&H. |

I think part of of that question will be decided by how many MP's get crammed onto the sensor. Will the drive towards lowlight performance be derailed by MP smashing?
I also don't entirely see an issue with 12mp... Who the hell on this site is trying to print billboards?
One thing to consider is that I would be amazed if the "new version" of the D700 doesn't have video, so you'll be paying right there for a feature that you aren't particularly interested in. |

I myself would like D700 but would wait for a newer body to be released in hopes that it would lower the price of the D700. 12 MP is plenty for me. If you cant get a good photo out of that then you should take up painting. |

For us Nikon users you should check out nikonrumors it does keep you upto date with the gossip, there is also some recent talk about if a replacement D700 will come out this year. It does appear that they will update the D90 though.
Have you considered the D3s? |

I know how you meant it, but I just have to point out the irony in your statement: Mecca=the holiest city in Islam; B&H=a camera store owned by orthodox Jews. Don't tell them that when you visit them in June :)

Don't worry, the irony was not lost on me. |

Apart from the cost ($2,000 more than the D700), it's just too big and heavy for me, so not really |

The hell with a new body, when are they coming out with that new 100-500mm AF-S VR to replace the old 80-400mm AF VR? Glass is always a better buy than a body. Well almost always. Since I like shooting long I'd wait for an upgrade of the D300 with hopefully the D700 low noise performance. |

I just picked up a D700 today knowing full well that there may be an update coming VERY soon. I know I wouldn't be paying the premium for the new version, and I am not against the current price point for the D700 so I went for it.
A few features I am confident will be in the update are more MP, native compatibility with the ML-L3 remote, dedicated Live View button, dual memory card slots, and most likely a movie mode.
The low light abilities of this camera are beyond what I expected. I do most, if not all of my shooting with available light so moving up from the DX was easily the most significant factor of my purchase.

Nikon, like Canon, is focusing more on low light capabilities in their new cameras instead of perpetuating the pixel wars- which as most know were over-rated. "only 12 megapixels" are more than enough in most cases. As for timing, if history is any guide, Nikon tends to release a new body about every two years. For the D700 that would be this coming July and for the D80, a month or two later. I too would be interested in seeing a replacement for the 80- 400mm VR zoom lens. It is their first VR lens and due for an update. I don't think they will expand it to 500mm. That is getting pretty big and expensive for even their top of the line "consumer" lenses which the 80- 400mm currently is. Even a new 80- 400mm would probably be priced in the $2,000 range. |

Wait if you are buying a new camera or buy now if you are buying a used camera. Do not buy the D700 new now as it will be replaced in the fall. Pick one up on eBay (or equal) for a good price - at least 50% of the current retail selling price. You can likely buy a used D3 for the same or less than a new D700.
