I'm interviewing for job next week that is in the town of Summit, approx 30 min west of Milwaukee.
1. Please send me good karma as I really would like to get this job and relocate. Alaska is beautiful, but too far from family.
2. What can any of you tell me about the area? Where to avoid, where to gravitate to, etc.
3. If any of you work for the new hospital there, Aurora Medical Center, what are you feelings about it?

Hell is hot compared to Arizona, but I wouldn't live in either place. ...at least not by choice. ;-)

I'm just razzin ya. Good luck with the job interview! Hope it works out.

Good luck.

That is my neck of the woods. Lived in that area for 40 years. I am just going out the door to the store, should be back in about an hour I will give you some info when I return.

Ok I can give you the low down. The hospital itself is located in Oconomowoc/Summit. It was built over the past two years after an extensive and nasty battle with other area hospitals. It is a nice new facility however. It is located right at the intersection of I/94 and Hwy 67 so it has easy access to several directions. Places to live in the area are Oconomowoc, Delafield, Okauchee, Concord, Ixonia, Watertown. The first 3 are lake communities Oconomowoc has alot of shopping etc Delafield also. Okauchee is more isolated and relies on the two towns it is in between for shopping. Hartland is the town on the other side.

Oconomowoc is also kind of an expensive town to live in pending on where you choose. Watertown is about 10 minutes west of Oconomowoc. That is where I am from. I lived there for most of my life. It is not as nice as oconomowoc however it is not as expensive and would be a short commute to work. Good school systems in Both Watertown and Oconomowoc.

I can give you heaps of information, Just fire away with questions, either here or PM me and I will help you as much as I can. I know that whole area like the back of my hand.

Things to do:
- Brewers, even if you aren't into baseball, the games are fun to attend
- Wineries, a few around Milwaukee, most up in beautiful Door County
- Dour County, really fun place to visit
- Brewery tours, we make a lot of beer in Wisconsin
- Milwaukee Zoo, haven't been there in years, but I remember it being nice
- SummerFest, the world's largest outdoor music festival (this years are are over 800 bands!)
- Wisconsin Sate Fair is in Milwaukee. I have never been to it, but heard good things
- You would only be an hour from Madison, which is a fantastic city (I live there now). Home of one of the world's best farmers markets.
- You would be about 90 minutes from Wisconsin Dells, which has water parks, mini golf, cutesy shops, etc. galore. But the big thing is Noah's Ark, America's biggest water park
- You would also be pretty close (90 minutes?) from Chicago, which obviously have a bunch to offer

Aurora Advanced in one of my company's customers (I work for Epic, a medical software company), and have been to a few of their facilities. Seemed like nice people, of course, it's hard to find a really mean person in the Midwest (some say we are nice to a fault).

I live about 7 miles east of Madison (Sun Prairie). I second giantmike's assessment. Grew up in SW Michigan, but have lived in this area for over 25 years and have been very happy here. Lots to do, lots to see. I will say that apple cider is better in Michigan, though, if that's a deal-breaker for you.

Good luck...if you get the job and make the plunge, I'd venture to say that you'll be happy with the decision. And, do take a look at some of the surrounding areas for living...Johnson Creek, Watertown, Deerfield, etc.

I didn't even think of Johnson Creek, Short hop on the interstate to Oconomowoc. However if Schools are important to you, Johnson Creek may not be the best choice. It is a small town but has alot of shopping and it is one of the faster growing towns in the area though.

Whoa, Linda! Welcome back, at least potentially, to the Lower 48! I have many happy memories of Wisconsin, myself; used to race sailboats there every summer when i was doing the "circuit" :-) 'Course, that was a long time ago...

Hey, we'd welcome another WI DPC-er!
There are lots of nice communities along the I94 corridor. For reference, from Waukesha west to Madison is about an hour drive. Some of the communities near 94 are *really* expensive (lake country), but others are relatively economical. Don't know if you plan on renting or buying, but look carefully at the property tax scenario for communities you are interested in. Taxes vary widely, and WI is a relatively high property tax state.
Southeast WI is a great place to live, all things considered. Friendly people, lots to do, nice seasonal climate (great summer weather, winters that are cold enough for winter activities but not brutally cold).

Good excuse for a GTG, IMO.

Long as you plan it while I am home for a visit. Looking at somewhere between mid/late June to mid July... Will be home for a week to ten days.

Thanks a lot everyone! Bugz...If I get the job we just have to do a GTG. That would be good way for me to find out where the best photo spots are.

Schools wouldn't be a big thing for me as my only kiddo is 23. I would need to find a place to rent that isn't too expensive, and that would allow me to have 4 dogs. If I get the job I'll be picking cheese-heads here for help in finding a place, as that will be the biggest stress of relocating. The only other stress will be the long drive.

Back home from a trip now, better chance to answer this question:

1. Karma's in the mail
2. If you don't mind winter, S. Wisconsin is a wonderful place to live. We came here 21 years ago because of my wife's job. Her job lasted 5 years but leaving never even crossed our minds. We've raised our daughter here and established a life. It almost feels like "home" now. As others have said, there are advantages to small town life. I've only lived in Madison, but it has many of the small town advantages along with some of the perks of a larger city, without the crush of a large metropolitan area.
3. No info at all, but it looks like Bugz came thru for you.

Good luck in the hunt!

OK, yeah, ya got me with that one.

Fortunately, Detoilet is relatively contained to the SE corner of the state.

And, as far as the Lions go, they've always sucked, but There's the Tigers and the Red Wings if you want winners

There are alot of good things to say about Michigan. Ironwood is one of my favorite places to visit Skiing, Fishing, Auto Racing to name a few, Not to mention they have great neighbors to the west...

I agree. In fact of all the places I have ever lived, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is what I miss the most. Sadly there are no jobs open there at this time. My earlier comments reflected my feelings on the lower SE area I grew up in. All of Michigan has something I dearly miss that you don't get here in Alaska, but I will find in WI....Oaks and Maples. The trees here are no where near as beautiful.
