I'm thinking of buying a flash unit for my Digital Rebel and I have a few questions that hopefully some of you can answer:
1. What's the difference between a dedicated and a non dedicated flash unit?
2. What is a Radio Slave System?

This may not answer every question, but it is a good start.

June...a dedicated flash unit is one that is made to specifically operate with your model camera. The camera's on-board computer and eTTL (electronic through the lens metering system) figure out the correct exposure settings without much, if any, photographer input. It makes life a lot easier for the photographer and also makes these decisions faster than a human does. That's all controlled by the camera's computer. Your camera's manufacturer makes dedicated flashes for it's cameras but there is also third party flash manufacturers that produce dedicated flash units from manufacturers such as Metz and Sunpak.

Non-dedicated model flashes do not use the eTTL metering or camera computer to make these exposure settings. There are two types: manual and automatic. Manual requires the photographer to use a flash meter to make settings and automatic has a sensor on the flash unit that tells it when the subject received enough light and when to shut off the light. You have to set ISO, shutter speed, aperature for correct exposure.

A slave system is one in which a non-connected to the camera flash(s) has either an integral or added sensor that is set off with either light from another flash, or a radio wave.
