I have a seller for the 70-200mm 2.8l is canon lens at a great price. Pics all looked great as well as test shots but then he sent me this and I don't know if this is legit or not.
This essentially a brand news lens. While in Vancouver for the Olympics Canon replaced my lens. But in order for that to happen they take the serial number off the old lens. Thus the very minor and I mean minor paint spots you see.
What do you think? The sale would be through paypal and insured.
ETA... Thank you for your thoughts. I will NOT be doing business with this one. Thanks again.

Keep away. Canon would never remove the serial number and stick it to another.
BTW, prices for the "old" 70-200 2.8 are still on their way down. |

| If they took the serial number off the "old" lens, then he's selling the "old" lens, which for some reason needed to be replaced in the first place and should have been returned to Canon in any event. Do not buy. |

| Yeah I thought it sounded a bit funny. If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. |

| You're better off helping that Nigerian Prince get his fortune out of the country, then you can buy a brand new lens with your share of the $30 million. |

Not sure. I don't know why he even told me what he did (I'm glad he did) but I was ready to go for it but had that uneasy feeling. It may be legit but for that much cash I don't want to take the chance. I decided to go with another seller, with great cred and several other perks. Costs more but I don't have that uneasy feeling. |

That was the first thought that occurred to me. He may have given you the story he did to explain what you would certainly have noticed upon receiving the lens. I do not believe that this is legit. |

Sorry I guess I could have worded it better. He sent the following
"This essentially a brand news lens. While in Vancouver for the Olympics Canon replaced my lens. But in order for that to happen they take the serial number off the old lens. Thus the very minor and I mean minor paint spots you see." |

sounds like it might be hard to zoom, and manually focus, as it's going to be very "hot" to the touch.

IF and I mean IF the lens was fixed under warranty Canon would KEEP the old lens and give him a new UNTOUCHED lens. There would be NO removing of serial numbers. Keeping this guy interested and silently notifying the local police where he lives or if in Canada then Id suggest the RCMP. His story has BOGUS written all over it :(
