I have the 'Canon' EF 70-200 F4L IS. I have the opportunity to pick up a minty EF 100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS at a really good price.

I don't want to keep both lenses.

I've always wanted the extra grab of the 400mm 'lens', but I am concerned about the slower f-stop and the push-pull zoom design of the 100-400.

Has anyone used both and care to offer their opinion based on their experience with these lenses?

Thanks in advance.

I own and use both. The speed and zoom are no big deal IMO. The real downside is the heft of the bigger 'lens' and inability to zoom OUT when you need to. The 70-200 is much handier to carry around, and I'll sometimes bring that and a 1.4x TC rather than haul the big gun around.

Also, you just might find that the 70-200/4 with a 1.4x converter outperforms the 100-400. You have one of the finest zooms available in that focal length, regardless of brand. In contrast, the 100-400 is a decent but not great performer.

I own the 100-400 as well as the 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I use the 100-400 90% of the time. I just like the extra reach. For shooting birds I have tried the 70-200 with a 1.4 teleconverter and the Autofocus works but is much slower than the 100-400. The push-pull aspect of the 100-400 makes it a bit more unwieldy but it isn't heavier than the version of the 70-200 I own. Your 70-200 is probably lighter. I have had a repair issue with the 100-400 recently. Maybe shooting over 25,000 images with it has something to do with that? My $.02

Thanks everyone, good info.

I think I'm going to hold off for now.

I've always thought that eventually I'd get the 100-400, but I've never been satisfied with what I've hear about it. The problem is there aren't a lot of other zoom options. I did the 300mm f/4L for a while but found that for my purposes (usually shooting near water), a prime at that range was unwieldy for the reason Shannon mentioned, you can't zoom back.

I don't know what other options there are though.

If you go with the 100-400 let me know what you think.
