I̢۪m new to photography. I will be at B&H tomorrow and am planning on buying an umbrella. I already have a stand, flash/umbrella adapter, cactus V4 remote trigger and 580EX II to go with my Canon XTi.
I was wondering if anyone out there had any good suggestions for a beginner.

The only thing I can recommend is go with a reversible silver/gold one.

Thanks Dave. I was thinking about white with a black cover. Possibly white/silver. Do you use the gold that much?

| Westcott 43 inch works well. I also like this one for shoot through and bounce. |

I have one of these, it is a shoot through with a reversable black and silver cover. I have a 5 in 1 reflector that has gold if I need it I can always point a light at that..

Just curious why you would suggest this, I have always found the gold/silver ones to produce pretty hard light unlike what most people want from an umbrella which is soft diffused.

I̢۪m the newbe here, but I guess the gold is to change the color balance. Not sure about the difference between silver and white.

White produces less glare (better for portraits IMO). Silver can create nice reflections on hair and fur (good for animals). And you can't shoot through :) |
