any suggestions?...but not so complicated like adobe premiere and not so Neanderthal like windows movie maker

Sony Vegas Studio is a decent program. A slight learning curve but once you understand the interface it is quite simple to use.

Adobe makes (or made) an "Elements" version of Premiere, much as they have with Photoshop. If you intend to later move on to a little more complex editing you can upgrade.

Adobe Premiere Elements is what I use for slideshows but it's main purpose is for editing video.

Pinnacle Studio is another option as is ProShow software.

If you're on a Mac then iMovie or Final Cut Express.

Most of these have trial versions. Pick the one that has the interface that you can work with. Though similar they are not all the same.
