From the recent Time article on Mark Twain, on the motto in US coinage.
"In God We Trust" is a fine motto " simple, direct, gracefully phrased: it always sounds well--In God We Trust. I don't belive it would sound any better if it were true"

I don't even know where to start with Mark Twain, there are so many great quotes and thoughts from that man it's ridiculous. We could start a thread of his quotes alone. One of my favs is "Don't tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish." & one more "Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please"

I look forward to a great future for America - a future in which our country will match its military strength with our moral restraint, its wealth with our wisdom, its power with our purpose. - JFK
Do you realize the responsibility I carry? I'm the only person standing between Richard Nixon and the White House. -JFK
In the United States, doing good has come to be, like patriotism, a favorite device of persons with something to sell. -H. L. Mencken
Men in authority will always think that criticism of their policies is dangerous. They will always equate their policies with patriotism, and find criticism subversive. - Henry Steele Commager
I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually. - James Baldwin
When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross. - Sinclair Lewis
Hmmmmm, must've watched too much Sunday morning political speak.

"Remember, you are never too old to play. You only get old when you stop playing." -- My band's sign-off at gigs
Movie favorite: from Star Wars IV: A New Hope -- "Stand by, stand by..." BLAM the Death Star explodes
"Destiny. You were meant for me. Perhaps as Punishment." Demotivators poster
And one more:
Build a man a fire and he stays warm for a night. Set a man on fire and he stays warm for the rest of his life. (I know, it's terrible, but I was ROTFLMAO when I first heard it.)

People are made to be loved and things are made to be used. There is much chaos in this world because things are being loved and people are being used. |

When I was at my cottage a few weeks ago I was looking though all the old books that are stored there and found a book that was my Grandfathers, published in 1934, so he must have read it as a young adult. While flipping thorough the pages I came across a few lines he had underlined and I really like this one as I think my Grandfather lived his life by it.
"Learn as if you were to live forever; live as if you were to die to-morrow" |
