Yes, I've watched my share of them. LOL! It used to be a time consuming hobby for me. Shaped cakes, large handpainted cookies, fondant, royal flowers, gumpaste, candy paste, painting with food color, the whole nine yards. The only thing I never attempted was sugar blowing. I have enough cake pans & tools to open a bakery. But the further I got into photography the less I did. I actually started turning down "jobs" for cakes. Now, I only get asked by family and pretty much just do basic homemade cakes for desserts at home.

I SO want to try sugar blowing!! You need to come over here and we'll try it together!!

I can't for the life of me pipe a leaf, though. I think my frosting must be too stiff -- the end of the leaf just splits, and never comes together to make a point.

I like working with chocolate, coating leaves and peeling them off, etc.

It just looks dangerous! Maybe someday. I can't pipe a rose. I prefer to make them out of fondant or gumpaste. My leaves are always great though. LOL!

Well, maybe you should consider making one every week or two, taking some really good pictures of it, and submitting them as stock to one of the macro-stock sites (Alamy, Getty, etc.).

The problem with that is my picky eaters at home. My husband will only eat chocolate cake with chocolate icing. My son won't eat cake at all, only vanilla cupcakes (bizarre, I know) and for a long time wouldn't even eat the cupcakes. So, that leaves me and my daughter. Neither of us can afford to gain any more weight. LOL! I recently made a homemade lemon meringue pie, I'm the only one who ate it. After 3 slices I took the rest to one of my aunt's houses just so I didn't finish it myself. That's why I only seem to make the basics anymore. Chocolate cake, vanilla cupcakes, chocolate chip and sugar cookies. I actually have a whole photo album with cake pictures. I made a sculpted teapot cake once for a fund raiser that sold for $125.

Ohhh yummmm Kelli! You must post pictures! And you must follow cakewrecks, surely? Speaking of which I haven't been there for a very long time. Must make regular visits. To th uninitiated, cakewrecks is a blog featuring mostly photos of truly hideous cakes. But when they showcase cakes that just absolutely freakin' boggle the mind in terms of detail and complexity, all I can say is, what a shame they were eaten after they were photographed. Yum yum yum yum...

When I was growing up I watched The French Chef pretty regularly. One of my all-time favorite Julia Child moments was when she turned a regular 8" round cake out of the pan -- without either putting a plate over it or trimming off the nicely-risen top first -- and as it bounced gently on the serving platter it developed a lovely 1/2" wide split right through the middle.

She just stared down at it for a long moment, then looked straight into the camera and deadpanned "And now you know why they invented frosting."

So I have been absent, been hanging out in Moab, really close to this , but unfortunately 5 hours away from home, working 6-10 hour days a week on a bridge on the Colorado river. I will soon be getting back into the swing of things as I get use to it..

I missed entering the May Free Study by less than a minute, ouch lol. I'm home sick from work today, I wasn't able to go to the New York GTG, and tomorrow's my 21st birthday. Not such a great week so far but hoping to take a self portrait later for the challenge.

Oh here's what I was going to enter for the free study, I really shouldn't have tried re editing it last minute, slow laptop gets me every time.

I am curious to see the vote break down on this one. Oh and I am predicting a 4.3 on my self portrait entry just cause that's how I roll.

@ Senay...Andrew, your model's tightlipped look works against her. Even if she has bad teeth, she must learn to relax her facial muscles. Have her blow out through her lips. If necessary mouth-breathe. I have to also, or I also do the clamped-mouth thing. Looks awful! Too bad you missed the NY gtg, there will be others in the future...happy 21st bday and it's just a number, so relax...21 was nothing, as was 25, 30, 35, 40...now I am old enough to be your mom, so no more whining about age! Please! ;-)

oh hey so i never told u guys, im the number 1 AA photographer in the whole state of Montana. yeh, take that other high schools! lol

oh, and while im at it im gonna bitch and moan for a little bit. the head editor of our newspaper got $1000 in scholarshps for editing the newspaper and the yearbook.

I, on the other hand, got nothing. not one scholarship

i didnt even get to letter in photography, because the MHSA doesnt acknowledge publications as something scholarly.

so the only recognition i got was my name on the index page of the book. they didnt even think to put me on the publications yearbook page.

and now im all worked up and pissy again

Snaffly...take a deeeeeep breath...yes, it sucks that you didn't get a letter or a scholarship. But you got recognition somewhere along the line, so take that to help make up for things. Little steps, kiddo, little steps... (that's what I tell myself each time I don't ribbon) ;-)

I'm sucking big time too, but I have no clue why. Some days I just want to give up. On the plus side, I just received my 16x16 canvas of this shot today and it's wonderful!

Katherine, you're a very good photographer. Don't let it get you down. In the end, you will probably get the last laugh.
06/01/2010 11:38:22 PM · #642
what matter most is portfolio. you've got that.
06/02/2010 02:50:07 AM · #643
Katherine, we are not going to use our global network to arrange lynch mobs etc to beat up a slack load of oiks that justify and defend themselves within their own little infrastructure, just because you're pissed off at them.

But we could.

And there is Art and Godzilla and a portfolio of village burning.

But of course it's not the way to go, with violence and revenge breeding and fermenting more of the same. We remain above crude ruffianism.

But we could do it.

Only we choose not to, of course ...

Just sayin'

My oldest "swam up" from Beavers to Cubs last night.

He looks so TINY with the cub pack though !

He'll be 8 at the end of August (he's the little one, blue shirt, black shorts).
The cub beside him just turned 10 this March !!

Here is my Peanut suckage.

Come on can't you see the mummy coming out of a sarcophagus or at least a creepy looking hooded figure? Man, maybe I am loosing it and just seeing stuff now.

I think I'll go on a break.. need to focus on going back to school. Let's see how long I will last with this photography abstinence. The feeling I'll get when I come up with a creative idea for a challenge but I can't shoot.. Ugh, it's painful now

Congrats, Lea!!

And to those of you frustrated with the whole DPC thing, I can heartily recommend the not entering challenges bit. Take some time off. Enjoy the peace and quiet of not watching your average fall. It's nice! :-)

I didn't enter the opens this week. I did enter the FS (because of the FSM) and still can't get over the scoring. It has very, very slowly climbed back up to a 5.1, but when it was down to a 4.7 I was pretty disgusted. I did pretty good for myself during the DPL, never went below a 5. But right after, right back to the 4's. I'm hoping to get an entry for Sunday at our meetup Saturday.

I actually recommend the other way around. I was thinking that I would take some time off, but I went out and shot for family. It was really nice not worrying about whether or not it bombed. If it does, I'm the only one who cares. It's actually a very big load of your shoulders. Give it a shot! Go enter just for yourself and see what it feels like.
