I remember reading recently in one of the forums about an electronic reader that allows you to download books online and store and read them at your leisure on these devices. I can't remember what they are called and that really doesn't make for easy searching.
Can someone help me please?

In my opinion the Kindle is better. Better quality ..so forth. But the iPad is a bit cheaper I think. You may want to look them up and compare what features you like about them. |

amazon has the Kindle, Borders (or is it Barnes & Noble) has the Nook, I think it is called. Sony makes an "E-reader".
I have the original Kindle, and made good use of it UNTIL they came out with a Kindle App for the iPhone--now I have the kindle books in my pocket all the time, can see color pictures on a backlit screen. The Kindle app is free, and does not require ownership of a Kindle device. I heard that Borders (or Barnes & Noble) plans to have a similar sort of app shortly if not already.
Dunno if the kindle is available in Australia, but the newer versions are supposedly "international" by which they may only mean Europe... :-(
But check on iphones and the kindle app availability down under, that may fit your need well.
iPad is coming out--should work better than either the kindle or the iphone w/kindle app (but purchasing a first generation iPad may be a risk, in my opinion)

there are similar things made by different companies since the Kindle came out.
Sony make one, and there's something called a Nook that I see in barnes & Noble a lot.
I'm not sure about the price differences (I predict sony's to be more) but it does give alternatives. |

I have the "Nook" from Barnes and Noble. My dad and sister both have Kindles. I prefer the Nook, because of the touch screen navigation. They both have the same e-ink display that's very readable, though only monochrome. I also like that I can load .pdf and .doc files onto my nook and read them that way. That helps with lengthy technical papers when I'm doing research stuff.
The iPad is much more of a multifunctional device, but I don't want one as an e-reader because of the display. A backlit display is great for looking at color pics, surfing the web etc, but for reading, I find that it produces eyestrain after a few pages. I can read the Nook for hours, just like a paper book. |
