did you ck the AF/M click on the side of the camera...sometimes I overlook that...also, take the lens off and then re-mount it again...sometimes it's just not quite on right

M/A is correct for autofocus. M is for manual.

Is the switch on your body also set to autofocus?
ETA: If you're holding the camera like you normally would for taking a horizontally oriented photo, the switch for this is going to be on the lower left side of the lens, right up against the body. It's a smaller switch- here's a photo

It should be on either C (continuous) or S (single) depending upon your preference. M is manual.

Does the lens focus at all, is it searching, or is there no response to focus the lens?
Another thing that may have happened is if you switched the focus function away from your shutter switch to, say, the Fn button or the AF-ON button.

Hi again.

There is no focusing at all but i now think it is the contacts on the D300 and not the lens at all, as my D2Xs works on the lens ok.

Here's a good thread about cleaning D300 contacts- Thread

Regardless, I'd definitely try checking what functions you have ascribed to the shutter button/ testing to see if the AF-ON button will focus. At least it isn't your lens though...
