I just heard a report that there were "tidal surges" about seven feet in height in Hawai'i -- the waves may not have reached NZ yet ... |

He may be jokingly but the hardcore global warming people believe it. Something about the ice sheets getting smaller or something like that.

In Japan the waves haven't arrived yet, but here's the warning:

Of course I'm joking. For Pete's sake. :) |
Okay, so I am not a scientist (not even close) but simple geology makes sense to me:
Glaciers are huge, heavy, sheets of ice. When intact, they exert enormous pressure on the surface of the earth where they sit but, when they melt (which they are now doing at an increasingly rapid rate),that pressure is reduced. The reduced pressure, in turn, triggers earthquakes and underwater landslides.
Is global warming causing the glaciers to melt? I believe that the signs of an overheating Earth are pretty clear and that we need to understand what needs to be done to help stop it.

Well, this earthquake is not caused by melting glaciers, as there aren't any of significance on the two tectonic plates involved. Further, this is also the same fault which was the site of one of the largest previously-recorded earthquakes (9.x in 1960), which was before there was any significant clacial melt, whether attributable to human-caused or naturally-occurring cyclic global warming ... the fact that another major earthquake was expected in the area is the cause of the relatively low casualty count, since building codes in the region include requirements for seismic resistance. |

Yep. Most of the TV stations are showing such a map, in the bottom right corner. |

well I'm glad for the low casualty count in Chile - and I'm hoping there aren't any major impacts in the next few days (keeping my fingers crossed). |

I just think that no matter what is "causing" all these natural disasters (2 major earthquakes in 2 months), the fact is that world is coming to an end. Just a thought.
"As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places." -Matthew 24:3-7

Give me a break! Wow...those "predictions" are so accurate, whatever shall we do?!....Quick, Quick everyone choose an invisible friend which will save you and forgive all your sins. But you better choose the right one....because there is only one magical fairy which will save you and all others will cause your DOOM!! Be afraid...be very afraid.
I'm sorry but some of us actually grew up. |

Growing up is overrated. "At that time Jesus said, 'I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.'" --Matthew 11:25-26

Do you think you could be just a little more assholish? I don't think you were offensive enough there... |

I'll try next time :)
I'm always stiving to achive new heights, lighten the mood and perhaps in the prosess help some people remove the stick that is shoved very hard up their ass.
What is often offensive to me, if when a discussion of a serious topic such as a natural disaster (and the said humanitarian tragedy) turns into a baseless doomsday fearmongery. Last I checked, people are free to believe whatever they like (that is not my concern). I would just appreciate if they left their preaching and their own religious views for audiences who are specifically interested.

Nothing like a major earthquake to shake things up around here. |

That seems unlikely |
On the other hand, "The largest tsunami ever recorded occurred on 9 July 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska. An earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale resulted in a massive tsunami which reached a height of 1,720 feet or 40 feet short of a third of a mile (524 metres, or over half a kilometre)."
I didn't realize they got that big! However the only reference I can find so far to today's earthquake is to a "huge 7 foot" wave that hit another part of Chile. |
That's an interesting story actually. Never knew that. Those pictures are amazing.

Please continue to keep Chile and the people in Chile in your prayers. Got a hold of all our immediate family in Chile...we were very worried there for a minute. Hope all are doing well. |

Here in Japan, they've cancelled all the scheduled programmes on NHK and had continual updates and warnings for the incoming waves ... which haven't been so high, really*. Nevertheless, train services and boating have been cancelled all round the coast. The first waves came a couple of hours ago.
*Actually, one place recorded 1.2 metres.

She's 17, give her time to grow up. I'm not disagreeing with you at all here, don't get me wrong. This is a photography site, not a forum to preach to us about what was written hundreds of years ago by ignorant manipulative men. I don't see why the mods let this stuff stay in the threads when they know some of us object to it and it almost always causes distress to members.
Right, I forgot to inject something about the earthquake.
Nature takes no hostages.
