Last night I was working on a project in CS4 (I did save it before I walked away). This morning when I opened my laptop my machine had restarted. This isn't abnormal because I have it set to install windows updates automatically but I have never had this happen before. When I started photoshop back up it was like I had just installed it. The tools pallet was reset, a recent action I created is gone, I saw a popup asking me about updating my graphics card which is one of those things you see when you install photoshop.

I was just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone or should I contact Adobe to report a bug?

this is probably not relevant, but do you normally work on 64 bit or 32 bit (may have numbers wrong)

I work on 32 but sometimes it will start up with 64 and have nothing there and i have to revert

I am on a 64-bit machine but I think you might be on to something here, I think I have seen it before say cs4 64-bit but right now it's not. And yes your numbers are correct. BTW my history state was back to 20 and my recent files was down to 10.

I'll restart here in a min I'm working on a gold mine right now.

yay i got a computer thingy correct!!! Bring out the marching band!!! It was someone off here that told me about the 2 versions of PS, we couldn't get any of my old actions to work on the 64 but he told me to switch over to the 32 and BAM everything has worked. Unfortunelty, my 64 opens automatically if I click on a pic, so have to go into and grab the 32

sorry for all the typos on some major painkillers and relaxers

If you install PS 64bit it also installs a 32 bit version. Maybe your 32 bit version has started up instead. I created two shortcuts so I know exactly which PS I'm using. Nik software doesn't work in 64 bit so I use the 32bit when I'm working on portraits, etc. For other stuff I use the 64bit version because it handles my 6GB of memory better than the 32bit version does. I need to restart PS 32bit once in a while because it's gobbled up 70% of my memory and won't give it back even when I close all files. PS64 doesn't do that.

I honestly never even paid attention to it but I do have both versions. However, I added an action in the 32bit it shows up in the 64bit which tells me that if I make any changes in one version it should show up in the other. I might be wrong but it is something I need to look more into.

When I started PS this morning I didn't do anything different that I normally do. I have a quick icon next to my start menu and I always use that.

Okay doing a quick check after I posted this, I do see a difference in the history and cache states between both programs.

JulietNN - Hope you read this... You can fix that problem (opening the wrong version automatically) by doing the following:

right click on a psd, jpg, or other file that you want to open in 32 bit automatically..

Choose "Open with" -> "Choose Default Program"

Then if the 32 bit version shows up in "Recommended Programs" choose it, otherwise look in the "Other Programs" area below the "Recommended Programs"

If neither of these lists has the 32 bit version of PS in it, then choose the button labeled "Browse" then navigate to your PS directory (Probably something very much like "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4" Then choose the executable file named "Photoshop.exe" from that folder (you might just see "Photoshop" without the extension ".exe".)

Now, this is very important - before you actually click "OK" to open the file, make sure the check box labeled "Always use the selected program to open this type of file"

Hope this helps.. (You probably can't really mess anything up here, so the painkillers shouldn't be a problem really.. *??*)
