Similarly...
Climber dies posing for photo
I can't believe that guy had all this junk and underestimated his food by THAT much... I would be overestimating on the food. I mean, you have a TRAILER to fill up... |

Have you ever had to pack in food to a remote wilderness for a whole season? I have, by foot, horseback and canoe. You have no idea... |

Yea, first you get a little worried, but people get used to anything, even when it gets worse.
That's a good time for humour, till you run out of jokes, too.

That's different though. This guy had a trailer that he had plenty of time to fill up with whatever and then drove it in there on a road. There should be no real consideration for weight, as there would be in your examples. And yes, I'm keenly aware of how much space/weight it takes to feed somebody, I solo backpack in the backcountry. Hindsight is 20/20, but that guy's foresight was 20/1000... |

Well...apparently he feels he can still do this because he is going back in. Not sure if that's an abundance of guts or a lack of brains. It would be nice to know who the photog is so we could at least check out his images.

No doubt, he screwed up. Now, he may have had enough food and then some for favourable or even average circumstances. On the other hand, we don't know if anything unexpected happened that caused him to burn more calories than usual. What was the weather like? Did he tumble down a ravine and had to scramble back up? Did he have to dig the trailer out of the snow on a regular basis? Did he have to tunnel to the outhouse once or twice a day?
I remember attempting to do some pressing geological work in the high country in Southern BC in January. The project was short-term and well prepared. When, however, I woke up to 9 feet of snow one day, I wasn't quite sure anymore how much work would get done, what distance one could travel in a day and at what physical cost. I can tell you though that I ate a little more those days than, say, your regular lumberjack. |

On the one hand he did grossly underestimate how much food he needed. He planned to stay for the entire winter and only made it part way (he still has a couple of months left). Then again, how much food do you need for each month? How do you plan for that? I guess there's also a question of if he had intended to restock at some point and got snowed in and couldn't make it out. |

I think he was just a little confused at what it meant by being a starving artist and went overboard. :)
Glad he's ok but you have to wonder how many of his rescuers said they won't go back for him again.
