Can anyone provide some insight on what to shoot fairly close to Colorado Springs? I'll be there June 17-20th and should have some early morning time free. Thanks in advance.

My favorites around there:
Old Colorado Springs (shopping), Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Manitou Cliff Dwellings. Lots there to see and do. Have fun. I love it there.

Was there several years ago but still remember some of the great wonders to see. There is The Air Force Academy, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls, Royal Gorge Bridge, The Pikes Peak Cog Railway. These are just some of the wonders of the area. I'm sure there is more that I have forgoten but this could be a good start.

There is also the Air Force Academy. The church there is spectacular. I've had the opportunity to photograph two weddings there, the stained glass and the pipe organ are amazing.

The wildflowers are beginning to bloom (we are late bloomers here) so the fields are beginning to show color. If you can get into the back country you'll have a whole selection of flowers and waterfalls to photograph.

Heck -- maybe I'll head to the Springs this weekend!

There's also Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, (and Cheyenne Mountain itself), Quail Lake, (don't go to Prospect Lake -- no water), the Broadmoor, and Hillside Gardens. Watch for wildlife. Deer are plentiful, especially around the Braodmoor, Cheyenne Mountain area. I work in Springs, and my husband and I saw a big, sleepy looking, brown bear about 20 feet from Highway 115 day before yesterday. If you have extra time, the road to Rampart Reservoir takes you behind Pike's Peak and offers some breathtaking views. Have fun!!!

The great Sand Dunes aren't TOO far away. Planning a trip there in the near future

What are you interested in shooting? You can get everything from landscape to mild cityscape. The fountain downtown is kinda cool. Helen Hunt Falls is fun, Palmer Park is alway nice.

If you go down to the Broadmoor Hotel, check out the Colorado Springs School. The main administrative building is based off the Trianon in France. It's on the national register of historical places. If you run into any trouble there, tell them you had the site suggested by an alumnus of the class of 1993. :)

Go Kodiaks!

THANK you all for some great ideas. Makes me wish I'd be there longer than 3 days!

I don't think I saw one person mention 7 falls. It's not easy to get a picture of at night..cuz the lights are too bright. I took some excellent pictures of the Cliff Dwellings..i have one picture that almost looks like it could be a post card for them. But not quite.lol. Anyway..also look up a place called helen hunt falls. the colors are amazing there and I've taken a picture that won quite a few contests of Helen Hunt Falls. It's beautiful down there.

My research told me:

1) Colorado Springs has 300 days a year with sun.
2) They get only 17 inches of rain a year.

So - I thought I was in for a real landscape treat - especially different views of Pike's Peak.

After all the planning, drooling, and dreaming - here's my best shot of Pike's Peak:

Yes - the best view I had of Pike's Peak was looking down at my feet after riding the cog rail to the top. Rain, drizzle, fog, more rain...

But they REALLY needed it - so I'm glad it happened! I'd go back to Colorado Spings anytime!

(I did get some images I like - just not the grand scenes I had "pre-visualized.")

Thanks again for the ideas - I'll save them for next trip.

Sorry you didn't get the usual weather here! We REALLY do need the rain. I'm in Denver anytime you want to venture up this way. Lots of beautiful places to shoot.
BTW - I'm headed downtown tonight to get my first ever night shot of the city. Wish me luck.
Cheers....Martin

We really did ask for nice weather just for you but the rain Gods didn't listen. I haven't seen so much rain at one time since I don't know when. Give us a second chance -- we'll get it right!

Think of it this way, without the rain you might have seen the beautiful smoke filled skies of fire season. Which is very good for the Newspaper challenge, but not so good for those who live in brush country. :)
