I'm struggling with a purchase decision. I have a 70-300 mm lens that I have had a good run with, but now find myself in the position to either upgrade it from the 66mm $200 variety to the 77mm $900 variety. Alternatively, I could replace my aging laptop. I know the benefits of the laptop upgrade, but have never used a higher-end zoom.
As a hobbiest, what would the benefits of the better lens be? For background, I shoot a lot of wildlife, soccer, and swimming.
Thanks. |

Is it faster? i.e. f2.8 vs say f4.5? If yes, the speed will be helpful with the soccer and swimming shots in isolating the subjects better.
Don't forget to factor in a potentially steep filter cost with the 77mm if you need a CP, etc... |

| Yes, it would be 2.8 vs the current 4/5.6. |

| You won't regret an upgrade to a 2.8 lens if you feel you can justify it. |

2.8 lenses are awesome. If you use the longer focal length a lot, and you're seeing negatives in your current focal length, then upgrade it.

| Is your computer still working fine? A new computer will last you 5 years or so and a new lens could potentially last you 20. All depends and what you need or want more. If your computer is getting old you may want to upgrade that instead but if it is still good then go for the lens. |

| My $.02 is that you will always want more reach if you shoot outdoors or sports from afar. I have the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS and the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS lenses and I find the 100-400 on my camera 80% of the time vs the 70-200 |

Get the glass. Your computer can't shoot pictures. Anybody can buy a computer, but not everyone can get the photos that you can with good glass. If the computers hard drive is getting full, buy the lens and an external hard drive.
