I used to wonder why many of the pictures that I think should score high didn't...

I used to rule out top 10 photos however, I'm often conflicted with images that finish top 10 but don't ribbon when I thought they would or deserved to... and for that reason, and that reason alone do I still give top 10 photos a MUAIMHO on occasion. Sorry.
