I got this a few years ago and it's always been meh... Never understood the raving that people do (I FAR prefer the 85f1.8 which I rave and rave about)..... Was planning on selling but never bothered to take pics and the other stuff you have to do to sell stuff.....
Fast forward to the new 7D - So I sit down and play with the micro adjustments... Back and forth and settle on +9 for that 50mm lens and holy shite... talk about sharp enough to cut your fingers...... Me thinks I finally see the thing people rave about :-) |

If the lens is back or front focusing (i.e. It's just not focusing exactly on what is shown under the focus point but a smidge eithr way making the image fuzzy or less sharp).... The newer bodies have a way to compensate for that.... Your 5DII does as well.
The 7D you can do it globally (I would assume that would bee if it's the body itself) but you can register specific lenses... You can run from + or - 20 or so (not sure the end of the range). The are more scientific ways (google lensalign if you want to throw $$ at this and setup a tripod blh blah) but I just took a bill from the desk and turned it so the printing was horizontal to the camera, set the lens to f1.4, set the body to 1/5000 or something stupid like that so I could rule out camera shake, set the 7D to spot centre focus (hit focus a few times and rolled off multiple shots and took the last one) and kept playing until the words under the focus point were sharp with even amounts of focus fall off top & bottom.
I did it mostly to play with the 7D plus I have never been happy with this lens. I was surprised at the difference this made!! Not sure I would go wild and do all your lenses but if there is one that does not feel right then what's the harm... You can always set it back to zero :-) |

Yes Ive been thinking of doing that will all of my lenses just for shits and giggles... its a cool little feature. There is somewhere online where you can download and print a good template to adjust your lenses as well but cant find it ATM.
