Hey all, ive been watching the website for a while now and recently became a member.
I uploaded my first ever entry as part of the "Graffiti" challenge (result 120th/127)

That was my entry, i know it didnt really fit into the challenge but what is your honest opinion on this photo (outside the frame of the challenge)

Feedback would be greatly appreciated

I gave this a 7 even though it may not fit the traditional interpetation of grafitti. I like the comp and lighting as well as the DOF. The important thing is that you are happy with it. Good luck in the future. Oh and I am pretty new here as well.

I think the main reason it scored low was due to DNMC.

I really like this picture. I like what it represents. Maybe just a tad more light on the subject....but just a tad; much more would destroy the meaning behind it.

(As far as the challenge went? I gave it a 7.)

I didn't vote in the challenge, but I'll give my two cents. I think your photo was saved by it being such a great shot. The lighting is good, the DOF is good. The angle is good. Graffitti?? Not so good. Most people here don't like shoehorned photos. There's out of the box and shoehorned. Out of the box is a unique interpretation...shoehorned is something that doesn't really fit the challenge, but you try to force the issue as if it does (like with a title). If I had saw your photo while voting...I would have said DNMC....now that I can read your description it's a mixture of both shoehorned and Out of the box. Actually I'd call it a bad capture of a good out of the box idea (not to be confused with it being a bad shot). Here is the question I pose to you....how is anyone to know that is a paint can? If I have no way of seeing or guessing that it is a spray can...my thoughts would be that you entered a plant shot into a graffitti challenge.

There are a few people here that completely ignore the challenge when voting on the photo...I personally think that promotes bad business behavior. It should be closer to an assignment. While it is a very good shot...it doesn't convey graffitti very well. If the can were less crushed or at an angle where you could see it was a paint can...I'm willing to be that this photo goes from bottom 10 to top 20.

Sometimes there is a fuzzy line between the two.

thanks albc28, very useful comment.

A paint can in very much part of graffiti, But in this shot, it doesn't even look like a paint can it to too flat. I think it would have scored a LOT higher, if the can looked like a paint can, then the connection would have been easily made.

But it is a nice shot

hehe true that, il do my best next time to make sure that the purpose of the photo is a little clearer.

This was a first attempt, can only get better from here onwards!

So you think lol. Oh it can get worse. Trust me there will be something else you overlook and people will slam your photo...maybe it's something you didn't overlook and people will still slam it. haha it's DPC...you never really know where you photo is going to end up until after voting is over.

I like the shot and the creativity, you've really showed some skill. Unfortunately it was clear how it linked to the topic and you got DNMC'd. I would have scored it high if I understood the link. Very creative keep up the good work and make the story clear.

I like the shot too, and I'm sure it would have scored dramatically better if the link to the topic was clearer. Good luck for future challenges.

Hi Michel,

It's quite a good shot and I like the symbolism, but if it is indeed a crushed spray-paint can it needs to be a little more obvious. Here the obvious is favoured (sometimes to an extreme imho, PM me for details) so your shot needs to spell it a bit more. And the challenge was Graffiti, so yes, people were expecting to see graffiti and not just a crumpled can with a sprout beside it.
