I was at the Australian Open Tennis Finals when I spotted this guy with this contraption. He had another Canon with what looked like a 300mm f2.8, but he also used this quite a bit. It looks home made and looks like he taped it together, but I was intrigued at what could be going on here...any ideas?

Here, he looks like he has the box opened to see he shots...(sorry about the focus, but I was using a 70-200 f2.8 with a 2X teleconverter, handheld at night under lights).

So, let me get this straight...you are at the Australian Open, a major Tennis event, and you are photographing other photographers?

That isn't a weird camera, its a 1 Series Canon camera inside a housing that keeps the shutter noise from being heard. I'll think of the name of it in a few minutes.

what's funny is the two in the bottom corner - both chimping at a shot the gal had taken. lol

Why would he want to keep it quiet when a hunderd others did not...???

I saw a guy with one of those boxes at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in San Diego and he said that was what it was. I haven't made it up to the tournament the past couple of years (you can bring in cameras for the pro/am tournament during the week but not the actual tournament).

Probably because there are certain times when you can't click the camera if it's audible. And he can get shots when others can't click the shutter. Kinda of like on the backswing of a tee shot.

True, but it wasn't an issue as I and everyone else was shooting whenever...

I did use Q mode on my D300S, this helped

just a guess that this guy is used to this set up. so may be this place he did not have to care for sound but probably he is used to places where sound is an issue. He might be using it this way just out of habit.
