Hey Mac people,

I have an iMac running OSX 10.4.1. I have completely forgotten my Admin password, been trying like crazy to remember it, and need it in order to install software so I can download pix from new cam.

Is it possible to bypass/reset password or get it revealed to you?

Here's one possible solution. Please do read the italicized note at the end, though!
I can't personally endorse this solution, don't currently have anything running OS X to try it on.
ETA:
If you have the original media (CD or DVD that OS X came on, then you can use this procedure, which is safer than the above.

Sadly don't have original media. Use Mac only for working on pix, my Internet connection is via a PC. So will do try it...cross fingers...

Depends on a couple of things, are you referring to the "root" password, or have you setup admin account as well as your user account and forgotten the password for that?

If it's the root account then just use your admin account and type this at the command:

sudo passwd root

It will ask you firstly for the password of the admin account you are using, then twice for the new root password.

If it's the admin account you have lost the password to, but you have the root password, then just do the opposite.

If you don't have the password to either account and just have a user account, then I'm afraid I don't know what you can do!

it's the admin account, pretty sure of it, don't even think I had a root account set up. And re-installation of found disk's software seems to have done nothing at all.

You don't re-install the software off the CD, you boot from the CD (restart the Mac, hold down C) and then use the utilities option. Have a look here, it describes how to do it.

OK going nuts here. Tried the steps in kirbic's post...both of them! The disk I have inserted says Mac OS X software, nothing more. Held down the C key, no Install screen, went to Utilities, no Reset Password. Waiting now for Covert_Oddity's link to upload.

ETA: Saw that link, C_O, will just have to go scrounging aorund for Mac OS X 10 INSTALL disk as opposed to SOFTWARE..

Thanks everyone for your help,

Susan
