I would sugest a raptor hard drive for your main drive. If they are pushing a 5400rpm drive then they are trying to move their junk.

This is South Africa. We're a bit behind on technology (though cameras seem to get here pretty quickly). I was told at a specialist Hewlett Packard shop that I would struggle to find 7200 rpm. The only place I've seen 7200 rpm hard-drives listed is on Dell's SA website and their prices are horrendous. I haven't even been able to find a shop that sells Dell desktops. The place that offered me the custom computer was one I went to looking for Dell, but they only had laptops. If fact they didn't have any ready desktops at all.

The Q8300 is a later generation and has SSE 4.1, a slightly faster processor clock speed, and a faster FSB.
The Q6600 has virtualization technology.

so the 8300 may be faster, but doesn't seem to have Virtualization.

Couldn't find the GT230, but the 8800GT specs a lot better than the GT220, except that the 8800 has 512MB and the GT220 had 1GB DDR3 and the 8800 suports DirectX10, the 220/240 support 10.1 The GT240 is close to the 8800GT, there's not much difference there. You're basically comparing the top end of a 2 generation old product with the entry level of the current generation (generations are 8xxx, 9xxx, 2xx)

Unless you need to run an XP program in windows 7 you don't need virtualization. And many XP programs run just fine in Win7 without virtualization.

As far as speed and capability, most people won't notice the difference between all the components you listed. However, PS and other editing tools are starting to use GPUs, so it may be safer to go with the newer GT2xx series boards.

Finally something that I actually understand. This makes me feel so much better. I just wasn't convinced about that custom made machine. I'm almost certain that I will go for the Packard Bell.

The newer Q8300's have virtualization. Just make sure you get the right stepping.

The SLGUR is the new Q8300 and has Virtualization Technology; the SLB5W is the old Q8300, and it does not have VT. Link - scroll to the ordering info table on the bottom.

I can't find any reference to the codes you mention, but it does say "Intel Virtualization Technology " at the bottom of this page. I think everything is okay with this machine.
