In a lot of the old classical still life paintings, there where a lot of pears used. In Europe it is a tree that grows in abundance, I know we have about 4 in our garden over there. It was a readily available fruit, same with apples. |

My last house where i lived in London had an apple tree and a pear tree. The apple tree was covered in apples come autumn but the pear tree literally had one pear a year. Without fail, one tiny rubbish pear. Hopeless!
As to the scores...

An utterly fantastic comment in the form of a wonderful poem has made my day. :) |

True, pears are pretty easy to grow, and they have a nice form and usually don't give off lots of glare. Easy to see why they were (and clearly still are) such a favourite fruit to capture. |

I am thinking now, I should have skipped this one. I thought I had done a half way descent job on this. The 5.4 is hardly something I feel rewarded for spending half a day setting up. :(

Awwww....Amanda....we all feel that way after entering challenges in here. You have something that I don't. You have a ribbon! :) Well, I have two ribbons as well...both BROWN! ROFL!!! However, I will say that I have had my pieces in other photography sites and other competitions off the net and they have done very well elsewhere but bombed in here. There are many people in here to can attest to the same thing. DPC is a very hard place to "crack". A lot of ribboners in here will tell you that they've ribboned and then gone on to challenges that have seen their scores in the 4 and 5 ranges again. Yet, their photographic skills haven't been lost or changed. It's a lot of being in the right place, at the right time, with the right subject matter and not necessarily all photographic skills. Even the most seasoned of amateur and professional photographers in here see low scores a LOT. :)
One thing that I had to learn was to put this site aside in your mind as the be-all and end-all of the photography world. It's a "niche" so to speak and it has its quirks. It's kind of like a lottery in a way. One might have a perfectly shot photograph bomb and yet, a less than "skillful" shot will grace the front page. Why? No one really knows for sure. There's no formula to this place...well, unless you live in Iceland! *grin, wink*.
So, chin up and don't you dare give up on your photography. If you were to judge your photography by this site only, most of us would be throwing away our cameras! :)

Oh, please, please, please...do NOT judge your work by basing it on the scores in here! There are a number of people in here who are professional photographers and cannot make a decent score in these challenges! There are a lot of reasons why shots don't do well in DPC. People who do well in here, don't necessarily do well elsewhere. The revers then, is also true. By all means...try other markets or venues for your photography but, NEVER give up on your work (which is wonderful btw after looking at your portfolio) based on the scores in this site!! Heaven knows I'd be throwing my cameras out if I based much on the challenges in here and the scores. There's a lot of different dynamics that come into play and sometimes it has nothing to do with photography. :) | |

If you are at a 5.4 in this, then I can take some heart in being just over a 5.0. Perhaps it is just a subject that is very difficult to wow people with. In my case, the topic really didn't hold much interest for me, but I entered because it was a good opportunity to learn a little more about lighting. Maybe happier voters will come out.

I guess there is nothing about mine that inspires anyone to do more than hit the 5 and get on to the next one. |

Well, the bright side is that a 5 does not take me down much and any 6's give it a nice boost.

I am hoping I will break the 5.0 mark for this challenge. Last 3 (also my first 3) entries have all been sub 5. This was my first still life and I think I did pretty well. 3 comments, gotta love that :) |

Quite picky i'd say. Is there some sort of rule that says it has to be the whole fruit for it to qualify as a still life? I wouldn't have thought so but i'm willing to be proved wrong. |

Strange. I'm having the exact same feeling about mine. Voters seem to agree upon it as well.
What was I thinking??

This will be my lowest score ever but I did get 4 very nice comments so there are at least 4 people who understand my humor. |
