I had the issue about a year ago and found out how to FIX IT! My 40D was under warranty and after lots of digging I found it is a issue with oxidation on the shutter button
EASY FIX!!!
turn camera off, Depress shutter and while holding down with pressure, twist shutter button clockwise and counter clockwise and it will shine the connections INSIDE!!! Do it once an it will be fixed for a year. If you do not do it good enough, you will find out. It WAS real annoying and I am glad I did NOT get the shutter button replaced.
worked on friends 20d and a friends 30D too!
(It will not fix the origonal posters issue tho as if the remote trigger will not fire it, it is not a button problem...SORRY) |

My mirror is NOT moving. The below fix didn't work on this thing! |

the same thing happened to me- the mirror wouldn't move so live view wouldn't work and no pictures could be taken. It was the mirror assembly that needed to be replaced.
Just call canon... really... call them.
Pick up the phone and call them.
You can rotate all the shutter buttons in the universe but you'll still need to call them.
So...
Call canon. They're nice people really. |

as I did say in the other post that it will work only if the self timer works but the trigger did not.
sorry if the post gave you a false hope...but your issue is not an intermittent issue with lazy shutter button. You have a dead shutter.
as stated above, you need to call Canon

Sillies, I'm packin' it tonight when I get home!! I called them on my lunch break yesterday. They will email me a "damage report" and what arm it will cost! Ugh!
*But, I did try the shutter thing last night just in case...
Thank you all for trying, but Canon will be getting MORE of my money. Will have them clean it while they have it! ;)

In the words of Monty Python it is a non shutter.
Good luck with the repair and I hope it doesn't really cost an entire arm. Maybe just a finger. |

Kat, did you ask about their loyalty program to upgrade to the 50D for $669 or thereabouts or is that too much for your budget? |

Yah, they mentioned the loyalty program, but I've still got medical bills I need to pay off first. If it's around or under $250, I may have it fixed. If not, I'll have to wait. Now I"m nervous for the email....yikes! |

not to scare you, but when I sent mine to canon NZ they charged me 1 hours rate just to look at it ($80). This was included in the final price, but this is what you'll pay to find the root of the problem.
You could of course try and find somebody other than canon to repair it, but I wouldn't trust them. |

OK, kids....here is what the final cost and the Repair on the beast was regarding my 40D issues.
Problem:
Shutter would not depress, camera locked up, had to remove battery to get the shutter button to release...no error code, no picture taken in any mode, mirror assembly wasn't moving either.
Actual Repair:
Replaced the motor assembly, tuned some of the electrical and cleaned(yay).
Cost:
Flat rate of $180 for labor and shipping to even look at the camera. (Based on camera model I was told)
Tax: $16.50
Shipping: $20
TOTAL: $216.50 Paid up front when you accept the repair estimate or they do nothing! No additional charges were incurred.
They did not charge me for parts which was nice!!! (With only 7500 actuations, that's the least they could do!)
It should be home by the weekend or beginning of next week. Big sigh of relief. :)

Reasonable repair charges. Sounds like they did you right. Glad that worked out. |

Sounds like the same thing that was done to my 40D. It has worked well ever since the repair. I have a feeling that Canon has a price-point at which they will repair almost any problem. After and above that they may offer you an option to upgrade to the 50D. for a reasonable price. |

This is the Canon Loyalty Program and they will do this across their lineup, although I haven't heard of anybody actually getting a 1D or 5D. So if anyone has a broken camera give 'em call and see what you can upgrade to. |

Do you think they would offer the loyalty program on a G9? Or is that pretty much a DSLR-only thing? |

I know this is an old thread, but I just wanted to thank the person recommending removal of oxydation by depressing and rotating the shutter button. My 40D had been having issues similar to Kat's, where I'd get a busy light, delays firing, etc. The other day I discovered that the shutter button on my grip, rarely used, had no such problems, which was an indication that it wasn't the camera's shutter mechanism but something else. The tip earlier in this thread to turn off the camera, keep the shutter button depressed, and rotating it (vigorously in my case) to remove any oxydation did the trick. It shoots like new again. I am SOOO happy! |
