Just wondering, how many of you spend more time reading about photography (or update! update!) on DPC (and other sites) than actually taking photos?

Interesting.. It's like any hobby, it's just as enjoyable reading and talking about it, as it is doing it :) This site inspires like no other I wouldn't be shooting habits and rusty things without it.. I do fall into the habit ;) of updating but it's only to field the comments so I can put them into practice.

All in all I think this site is not only improving my photography but it's inspiring me to get out there and shoot and shoot and shoot and...

I used to spend all my time here - but in the last few months I haven't done much at all becasue of being busy, and also becasue I feel the standard of quality has dropped.

Once I used to feel that the top 3 were always great shots, now I feel they are not always so great and don't really agree or understand why some are ranked so highly by so many.

Having said that I feel DPC is a great way to learn, if you look on it as a constant source of getting your bum of the seat and shooting / looking at things you would otherwise ignore.

That is a great quality and lesson.

On the flip side, I feel the some critiques can be very poor and missleading, and thus should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Some obviously are great and helpful but there are so many 'too dark' ' not rule of thirds' bad DOF, 'to contrasty' that one would get mixed up if one tried to take in every comment.

All in al DPC is a haven for improving your pictures.

Isn't it funny when you look back at when you first 'signed up' for this site..I know myself looking back at some of my first photo's I entered are just awful (imo), but now I look at how far I have come over the past year or so due to participating on this site, lots of reading in the forums, embracing comments and utilising them in my photos. I believe there should be a balance of reading and practising and having lots of fun. So, in answering your question David: 'Is DPC bad for your photography?' I definately think NOT!!!! By the way check out my new portrait pics in my portfolio.

I honestly believe that DPC has made me nothing but a better photographer. When I first got my digital camera, I discovered this site. I lurked, watching, learning how people were taking pictures and what they were taking pictures of. I used the site to notice what kind of shots inspired me, and therefore what kind of photos I wanted to take. I have also seen some great shots that I have tried to emulate (sometimes horribly) but this site is perfect for me. It makes me want to take a lot of pictures, and more than anything, it makes me want to take them well.
