I'm going to Ghana for 10 days leaving cold, wet England for stonkingly hot humid equator. Is there any risk to my camera and lenses (Nikon D90)? I'm thinking condensation etc on the internal parts (obviously I'm expecting condensation hell on the outside of the lenses etc).

Seems to me the only time you'd have condensation problems is when you were getting off the plane in Africa. Planes are usually really arid, which would dry out any condensation...

I was in Mali a few years ago, and I don't recall any problems with condensation at all.

Where you will have problems is when you take a cool camera into a hot, humid space. Condensation happens when an object is cooler than the dew point of the air around it. In very humid situations, the dew point can be within a degree or two of the actual temperature.
In such an environment, if your camera is kept in an air conditioned area for a length of time, then taken outside, you will get condensation. Try to keep the camera as warm or warmer than the surrounding environment; if you do, condensation can never happen.

I think you should be more interested in swiping the sweat off your forehead and face so your camera won't be oiled up and slippery. As explained above, condensation is only a problem when going from cold to hot, when you go from hot to cold it's called frost. In my case with the cold temps I take my camera out to acclimate it to the temperature before taking any shots.

I travelled from London to Colombo, Sri Lanka and on my home from Colombo airport, I took the camera (D200) out to and looked through the viewfinder and saw nothing. I checked the camera and both my lens and viewfinder glass were all foggy. I removed the lens to find the mirror in the same state. I let it dry naturally (which actually took a long time) and everything was OK. This has also happened when I stayed in hotels here and left the camera out when the AC was on.

I live in cold damp newfoundland canada. I've done 6 months in africa in 2006 1 month in 2008 and then a month in brazil last year. My warnings are pretty standard... dont change lenses in the dusty weather... duh. and also I found sometimes (yes even in africa) it can get quite cold at nights. and without insulation (like many parts of africa) condensation could be a worry. however that being said. I would not expect any kinda of problem from it. if it does get exceptionally cold one night, wrap your gear in a sweater and leave it for a bit. I leave my gear in the bag WITH ME ON THE PLANE and leave it in the bag a little after I get off the plane and out of the airport. I emphasize with you on the plane because last time travelling to africa my bags got lost. In those bags... thousands of dollars worth of gear. lenses flashes batteries chargers memory cards and a few not important things like cloths and toiletries. If you can take your stuff with you on the plane... DO IT.

* for those concerned, I did bring one camera and one lens in my carry on, so the first 2 weeks weren't a total loss (pictures wise). and I was reconnected with my bags after that. After them having gone to another country in africa and sitting there for a week and a half and then we I got it back, it was simply I walked into a bag FULL of bags looked through them for mine and took which one i said was mine... So thankfully no one else came through and said mine was theirs...

Thanks folks. I guess I shouldn't be too worried then about the heat busting the camera.
