I just picked up a couple of EXTREMELY helpful and interesting books, PORTFOLIOS THAT SELL by Selina Oppenheim and PHOTO PORTFOLIO SUCCESS by John Kaplan. Both mentioned the importance of portfolio reviews when it comes to professional photography.

I think this is how it works: you spend your $500-$1000 making a professional portfolio, then you take it to various photo gatherings where portfolio reviews are held. Professional photogs and others give you critique on your portfolio, but this is also where you start networking with marketers, other photogs, and leaders in the business--who ultimately get you jobs.

Surely there are a few of you who do this or have done this--even if you didn't pay out the big bucks for a professional portfolio. My questions are simply: how important is this? How do you begin? What kind of photographers do this kind of thing?
