Hi all

We are thinking about buying our 12 year old son a digital camera for Christmas. At the moment we don't have any model in mind and thought you guys might be able to come up with some suggestions before we go trawling through the myriad of different models.

Looking to spend in the region of 200 - 250 gbp although may be able to stretch a touch more for the right model. Some other things:

Must have:

CF card memory.
Rechargebale Li-Ion battery.
At least basic manual controls (shutter/aperture, etc).

Good to have:

External flash capability
Accessory lenses etc available.

Any suggestions/ideas would be most welcome.

Cheers

Roy

I have a Canon Powershot A40. You'll get that for around 200 UKP. It's a 2MP camera, has CF memory, some basic manual controls, accessory lenses available.

It runs on AA batteries, but I'd rather have some 1800mAH AA rechargables over a proprietary battery anyway. It doesn't have a connection for an external flash, but you can buy slave flashes that are compatible with digital cameras.

Have a look at my profile and gallery for examples of images taken with one.

check out //www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk/ for some of the best UK prices. I got my fuji 601z from here but its a bit over your budget. Manual controls tend to come on the more expensive models.

I also raise my thumb for the Canon Powershot A40!
It's good for snap-shots as well as more advanced photography when using the manual mode. You can add standard 52 mm filters and lenses to it (for macro shots you definetly need some lenses), it is made solid enough, it is not too small to be well hold but still can be carry in a pocket.
Have a look at //forums.powershot-a.com/ where many A40 users like Jamie and I comunicate and look at some of the pictures posted there.
You can also visit my profile and gallery if you like.

Any other thoughts anyone?
