is it really worth upgrading to a F828? The F717 is a fine camera |

I think so. I love the 8 megapixels. I want to make large prints (16x20) and that camera will make them a lot cleaner. It also offers 64 ISO, while the best 717 is 100. it has slightly better zoom, shoots to RAW, and a faster shutter speed capablilty. Mostly, I want the 8 megapixels. Am I completely wrong? I can't find a rebel for the same price I can find an 828, although I would be willing to get one for sure.

What about the Nikon CP 8700? It's 8.3mp and has 50 ISO. :) Looks about the same or maybe cheaper then the 818 in price. Unless you REALLY need to make top notch 16x20 prints right away, I'd wait and see if Cannon releases a camera in response to the Nikon D70. Maybe it will have 8mp?
Personally, my next camera will definitely be either a Nikon or Cannon DSLR, I would never upgrade from my 602Z to the latest comparable Fuji model (S20 pro?), for example. Just doesn't make sense to me to do that.

I don't think it is in response to the D70 but Canon does have the PowerShot Pro1 with 8mp. |

Yep, that's another one to look at. It's obviously meant to compete with the Sony and Nikon (the 828, and 8700), and priced almost exactly the same as the others. So many choices, isn't it great!! The best thing to do if you really need an 8mp camera is to read the reviews of all three and go from there (not you, Fstopopen). |

Hey Drake
I have a digital rebel that I was trying to sell here a week or two agoo, now its on ebay, you can check the auction here //cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3818259011&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1
Its the kit that doens't have the 18-55mm lens, but I am including an extra Canon battery with it and you can always pick up a 50mm f1.8 real cheap so...

Make that all 5 by including the Minolta DiMage A2 and the Olympus C-8080. High-end prosumer segment of the market is particularly well served currently. You owe it to yourself to consider them all. |

Stick with the Sony series my friend. why go through the hassle of carrying extra lenses, swapping and changing when, as you know, CARL ZEISS 28-200 comes standard on the SONY. allthough i have a lot of respect for Nikon and Canon cameras I think that the Sony F828 is the pick for the price, I had a similar decision a few months back between the D70 or the KISS300D(rebel) and i believe i chose wisely. the most important thing on a camera for me is the lens and i personally think that CARL ZEISS is the best. also I dont like wasting time changing lenses, allthough it must be nice to have a great selection it can sometimes also make you miss a shot. and I have heard there are some worries about the plastic fit on the rebel holding a heavy lens but i have not heard of one breaking yet.
You are a Sony user, stick with the devil you know is my advice to you sir. I love my Sony and it prints out great to A4 and even A3 size.
I will never sell my F828 even if i upgrade, and for me to upgrade would take a camera like CONTAX with a ZEISS fit at 13MP at least for me to consider it. for now CONTAX just make the TVS (I have one) at 5.2MP and is a nice point and shoot semi-pro class machine.

That is what I was thinking. There is no way I would buy another 8mp other than the sony. I love the feel of the sonys and I am very comfortable with the controls. I had considered the rebel, but it is a little out of my price range and I already have a lot of accessories for my sony. If the price was right, I would get a rebel, but I haven't found one yet. thanks for all of your input.

Actually most reviewers regard the 828's lens system as a weakness. Especially for it's relatively high level of Chromatic Abberation, and it lacks stabilization. If you go to megapixel.net you'll find that the 828 shares the lowest rating in the class for Lens Quality with the Pro1. Many Canon fans had great expectations for it's "L" lens when the Pro1 was announced but nobody is saying now that this one lives up to the reputation of Canon's best glass. Carl Zeiss is also a name with a great reputation but the lens in the 828 is behind the times technology wise. There are some who think it is really a lens designed by Zeiss but made by Sony (or a sub-contractor) with a royalty being paid for the use of the name. The best lens system currently available in a fixed lens digicam is probably the 12x stabilized ED Leica in the Panasonic DMC-FZ10. However the FZ10 is only 4MP so it wouldn't meet fstopopen's desire to make large prints.
Brand loyalty if a tough barrier for objectivity to overcome. I cited megapixel.net because it gives numerical ratings but there are many other review sites online. Before you purchase you should read up on 8MP cams at:
imaging resource
DPReview
Steve's Digicams
and especially The Luminous Landscape which has extensive write ups on the 828 and the A2. |

I've been reading a lot about these new 8MP prosumer cams. I came very close to buying the Minolta A2, but after reading the DPReview critiques very carefully, and particularly looking at the controlled sample comparisons, I am holding off.
All of the 8MP cameras that use that Sony sensor are more noisy than older cameras at anything but the lower ISOs. The A2 looks like it wins feature wise, but then I compared the sharpness of the test images with the Pro 1 and there was no comparison!
I'll put up some links later to the specific images I am talking about if you're interested. |

Of all the current crop of 8mp cameras, I like the Oly C-8080 best. I've had some opportunity to try it (in the store), and it seems to fit my hands beautifully. I may even get one soon. My debate is between an 8mp and a dSLR, and image quality seems to be getting very, very close on the digicams to the dSLR's for most situations. I hate dragging around a bag of lenses, not to mention the expense, but I also LOVE the response and the image quality and the versatility of the Rebel. I'd like to give the D70 a shot (I had a week with the Rebel and loved it, but couldn't convince myself I wanted to double the investment to get the lenses, etc. I'd want). I wasn't thrilled with the Canon kit lens (although it wasn't that bad, either). Anyway, this post was to say consider the 8080! I think it's a fine camera and it's getting a lot of good reviews. You give up a fully swivelling LCD, and it's only a 5x zoom. |

Yes, it looked good spec wise like the A2 on DPReviews, and unlike the A2, was also rated well for picture quality.
However, the larger range of telephoto is one thing I'm after. There's a big difference between 5x and 7x! Also, I really like the swivel LCD on my Canon G2. I was already not happy about giving up full swivel when I was considering the A2--but the A2 made up for it by having the best viewfinder, and one that tilts as well!
I often ride my bike with my G2 around my neck, or walk that way, with the LCD swiveled to the side and facing up. Makes for good candids, like I used to do a long long time ago in high school with a twin lens reflex. |
