My iTunes software seems to have abandoned my iPod and the 40GB or so of music on it. I uploaded two CD's today and then noticed that they were the only two CD's in my library. Is there any way to restore the library from the iPod? |

I'm a little confused. Is it the IPod or Itunes on your computer that is missing the music? Is it a PC or Mac? |

My iPod has all of my music intact. If I open iTunes, my library is empty except for the two CD's I imported before I realized there was nothing else there.
PC, Windows XP. |

In iTunes, you can either sync your device automatically, or manually. If you have automatic selected, and you plug in your iPod, it should ask you if you want to sync your iPod to your computer since it will detect the songs are no longer there.
ETA: I keep mine set to manual, that way it doesn't automatically delete any music files.

Firstly, be careful what you do from here. If your music is indeed gone and you sync your iPod, it will remove it all from there too.
It's possible that iTunes has just lost the location of the music files for some reason, have a look for your MP3's (or M4V or whatever format your music is in) on your HD, I'm not sure where it would be on a PC, but in a Mac it would be in your Music/iTunes folder.
If your files are indeed missing, you can transfer them back from the iPod, but it's not something you can do from iTunes, you're going to need to get some other software, have a look on Google, it should be fairly easy to find something.
Good luck! |

Thanks for the legwork, guys. Some of the links look helpful. I'm going to wait until Monday to continue this. I have a backup of some files at work that might have the .xml and .itl files that seem to be missing. I should clarify that all the music is still on my hard drive and on my iPod, but iTunes isn't making the connection anymore. (I think my son tried something with his onw iPod when I wasn't looking.) Still, I'd like to preserve my playlists and stats if I can...
Thanks again! |
