So can anyone answer why the 5DMKII was slowed down to 1/200 when almost every other Canon body is at 1/250?

It most likely has to do with the FF sensor and the resultant greater shutter travel. The original 5D is also 1/200. The FF 1-series cameras are 1/250 though.

It's a full frame so the shutter has further to travel. The 5D mk1 is also 1/200. They have to cripple the lower bodies compare to the 1-series for marketing purposes.

Hmm that reason alone would make me waver toward the 7D over the 5D MKII, Ive had a 5DMKII to play with the last couple days and the more I play with it the more appealing the 7D is, which Ive also had the opportunity to use as well. The slower flash sync is a biggie on the 5DMKII for me anyway, as well as the focus points seem to be crammed too close to the center of the viewfinder which IMHO seems kind of a waste of real estate. I use manually chosen points a lot. The placement of the IR receiver is also quite a hindrance for using an IR remote. There is a bit of a noticeable difference in image quality esp at higher ISO's between that and the 7D but its not a HUGE difference and that's the only thing Ive found so far that the 5DMKII has an advantage with but doesn't justify the extra CDN$1000 over the 7D.

If you are used to shooting with an APS-C camera, and the larger format is not an attraction for you personally, then yes, I'd agree that the 7D has a lot to offer in features missing from the 5DII. It benefits from being later in the development queue, and its price benefits from it being an APS-C camera.

The main reason I sold my 5D was the piss poor AF system and the amount of coverage the AF point have in the viewfinder. Main reason why I bought a 1DsMKII to have full frame goodness. The 5D covered the 1DsMKII in ISO performance, and that was the only area, everything else wasn't even close in my opinion.

I couldn't agree more about the AF points, they are a bit of a PITA and Im quite surprised actually at the poor AF point layout.
