Not really. Just connect your D80 via USB to the netbook and download directly from the camera with the card still installed. No reader necessary. |

Not sure who you'll be flying with or what kind of plane you'll be on, but you could check out Seat Guru to see if it lists power where you'll be sitting.
I could be wrong but I think the economy seats on my Qantas flight from LA to New Zealand had power. Lots more amenities and comfort on those really long flights than the standard domestic fare. |

At near $500US you get 80 GB storage and a 3.8" viewing screen. I saw the netbooks, with 160GB storage and 10" screen for $300US. For $200 less, I get a multiple use device, with internet access, 3 USB ports, SD card reader, and can handle PSE 7.0. Barnes & Noble has a free for download e-book reader and the e-books are cheap ($10 for new release, less to free for others) and movies can be converted to view while traveling. A second backup is made using a WD PassPort USB HDD each evening. Battery life is good. I have since bought 5 of these, for personal use or as gifts, and all are working fine. Two have been upgraded to 2GB memory. When traveling for work, I use my laptop; but the netbook accompanies me when traveling for pleasure.
Down side? Since there is no CD/DVD drive, software must be installed using a portable, USB drive, and there is no Compact Flash card slot, so a CF card reader is needed. |
You hit it on the head! I can see no use for one of those Epsom things...way over priced and limited. I have an Acer with 11 inch screen, 4GB of Ram, running Windows 7 64 Bit, 320GB HD, HDMI out, SD Card reader, 3 USB ports, and it runs fast and the batteries are good for 9 hours...beautiful screen, the size of a book and light as a feather. It's my favourite toy! I tried Photoshop on it as a trial, and it runs superbly! As quick as my desktop. I udes it for movies on my international travels and it was awesome! Highly recommended |

So they DO play movies - I was wondering about that. Of course you need to get either an external DVD drive (which I don't want to bother with) or transfer your movies to a stick - and that's my next question. I have a TV series on DVD I want to start re-watching - how can I get those episodes in a format that I can put on a memory stick? |

You need some software in order to make it work. The first step is to rip the content with DVD Decrypter and the second one is to re-code it in a playable compressed format with Auto GK. Both are freeware.
I don't know about subtitles, I mostly use it for music...

Heh - and here I was hoping it was a lot easier than it was when I used to know how to rip DVDs. Apparently not so much, huh? May not be worth the effort. You'd think since I already own the DVDs there would be a feature where I could go download the AVI or some such. That would be too easy!
Wasn't aware of Auto GK - thanks for the link. I'll see if it'll be worth the time and effort. Otherwise I'll pick up an external player if I choose to do the watch movies thing. |

Another useful and free DVD ripping tool is Handbrake. It transcodes data, though it is not meant to decrypt copy protection. Worth a try. |

this sounds like a winner. What's the model number HotPasta? I'm having a little trouble looking it up?
And, btw, thanks to Melethia for bringing up this subject.
I sure hope Northern California is still in your itinerary.

Alice, I'm going to try to convince my Mom that she wants to go on a road trip. What to do with our combined three cats (who are NOT going to get along) is another story, but we'll figure that out... Anyway, she has a friend named Alice who lives up your way. I figure we can do a two-fer. :-) |

Oh, and of the ones I have available to me to choose from (in English with an English keyboard) there are only two with more than 3 hours of battery life - one is a Toshiba and I think the other is a Dell. I'm not inclined to choose the Dell... The Acer we have is only a 3 hour battery one. The Acer you have, Enzo, sounds perfect! |

You can buy an aftermarket 6 cell battery for the Acer. My wife's has the 6 cell. Mine only has the 3, but they are interchangeable if needed. |

I have an old sony viao u101 (around 4 years old) which has 512mb ram and I think 800mhz processor and that runs cs3 fine, a little sluggish, but the current netbooks will run photoshop fine. |

Hey, Thanks, Skip. I appreciate that.
And Melethia, you say three cats? Ha, make that four when you hit San Francisco. VooDoo will organize the gang.
:-))

The B&H link goes to a 15.6" widescreen laptop. Not quite a netbook :-)

The one you're looking for is the Acer 1810tz (I pm'd Enzo yesterday asking him about this!) |

Thanks for all the research. I think I found it at Amazon. B&H has discontinued this model for some reason.
