Maybe they are teenagers, maybe they aren't. The plate is the place to start, off course.
Just read the irony, comedy and tongue in cheek in my post and preceding cartoon. |
True that there is no evidence of them being teenagers but they are idiots none the less. :) |

You're right......we don't know that they're teenagers, though it is a reasonable, and logical conclusion to make.
As Patrick pointed out, they definitely are idiots, and they certainly didn't exercise any forethought or foresight by their deeds.
What difference their actual age makes as to their being thoughtless idiots eludes me.

Well obviously these people are just stupid and horrible and that's the explanation for their behaviour. So sorry for trying to analyse the situation in more detail. |

Wow.....that was special....
If this was your yard they were tearing up, or your sleep that was being disrupted, somehow I think you'd feel differently.
I've never understood that whole "Kids will be kids." attitude towards willful destruction. It's wrong, it's not acceptable, and if you're old enough to drive, you d@mn sure know better.
So take the attitude, and direct it towards the stupidity of the people being jerks, not those of us who have to live with it.
I live in a very rural area, and I'm constantly picking beer cans & bottles off my property, and I've had to buy four mailboxes in the four years I've lived here due to @$$hole, drunken mailbox bashers who take out mailboxes all up and down this road.
That sh*t isn't funny, and it isn't harmless when it causes people grief and expense.

NikonJeb: I also live in a very rural area. I feel your pain.
Magnu_za: I believe I said I am guessing. I assume nothing. However, if you look at the original post, the Doc said, "kids." Since he is an highly trained observer (all be it medical and not criminal forensics), I am guessing he good tell.
Melethia: Worked, putting myself through college, as a golf course superintendent for 11 years. I can tell you from experience that replacing a green's turf is very, very, very expensive compared to just the fairway (cemetery grass). We hated when the deer romped across the greens with the pointy little feet let alone car wheels.
MelonMusketeer: Here, here. My point exactly.
BTW, Dr. Achoo, You making an headway in pursuit of these perpetrators? (That's CSI speak.)

Is the lot vacant with no improvements? Are they actually damaging anything besides random weeds? I have a jeep.. and like to go 4 wheeling etc.. it's a blast. The kids are having some fun.. leave em be. If they are interrupting your sleep... then just let them know your there... they won't come back if they know you spotted them. I remember when I was younger... during snowstorms in west texas..we would try and find big vacant lots or open parking lots where we could slide around and have some fun.. we weren't out to damage property.. or hurt anything. |

Yeh it is fun but not at 3am and I can imagine the response to telling them! - it's all about having consideration for others - treat people how you would like to be treated yourself -
Lets face it there are jerks about of all ages - its not an exclusive club for the youth of today !

You need to build a "special" mailbox with concrete and structural steel. Then you'll get to pick up broken baseball bats too.

There is one particular road here locally where the mailbox batters seem to like to travel. One resident solved it by building a rock/concrete pillar to put the mailbox in.
Another put a smaller mailbox inside a larger one, filled the difference with concrete and mounted it. It looks like a regular mailbox from the side.
Of course, if the mailbox batters had even a minuscule amount of respect for themselves and others' properties, the homeowners would not have to go to this extra expense (time and money). |

Yes, I often thought the correct "sentence" for those who damaged the greens was to work at the course for their summer. To try to keep those greens playable. And to make them take up the game, at least for that summer, to find out what an annoyance it is to putt across tire tracks.
The course that this used to happen to is a delightful municipal in Tampa named after Babe Zaharias. It was a short 18 hole course; no one really took motor carts (in the US that's unusual) and the "regulars" had been "regulars" there for decades. I'd show up as a single and take what I could get. I played with a guy who'd been a professional bowler until his wife shot him; played with a guy who'd been a roadie for the Grateful Dead. Played with a threesome who were bitching on the first tee about having to play with a "woman", then I proceeded to beat all three of them on the front nine. Played with two very much older gentleman, one of whom was very hard of hearing, who kept telling the other one, loudly, that I had good legs. And then there was stumpy, the squirrel with no tail who'd come up and beg for peanuts at the first tee. Loved that course. But yeah, kids would drive on it for fun. Fairways weren't much to speak of in the best of times so it didn't hurt them much, but the greens were at least halfway decent most of the time so when they nailed a green or two it was really disappointing. |

Not really.
My friend made his mailbox out of steel plate about 3/8" thick. It's welded to the end of a structural steel I-beam made from the same size plate that's buried 10 feet into concrete. I'm pretty sure it could survive a direct hit with a nuke. It's definitely baseball bat proof, he has the broken bats to prove it. I just wish he had pics of those guys faces when the impact occurs. |

A camera with a sound-actuated remote, such as might be used for wildlife pictures, might do the trick. Or maybe one of those tiny wireless video security cameras ... |

Doc, I will loan you this thing for a yard ornament for a while. That should slow them down.
Have you thought about lighting them up with a "Q beam" light?
I would guess that they haven't been back since the original post, esp if they saw the big white lens aimed at them.

Dude, I got access to all kinds of that stuff!
Guess what?
Some guy in the area did that, d*ckhead slammed his mailbox with a baseball bat, broke his shoulder, sued the guy, and the f*cking judge awarded him a settlement.
How screwed up is that?
The premise was that the guy did it with the intent of creating harm!
What a crock!!!!

As far as I know, your mailbox has always been that way, I dunno who would have built it like that. |
