If I went to the movies it would cost me $14 dollars for a ticket, $6 for a large coke, $4 for popcorn and $4 for Pods. I would go in and sit down in the dark for 2 or 3 hours in a hard chair with peoples heads bobbing up and down in front of me, kids chattering around me and the rattle of chip bags drowning out the whispers of the movie stars. I would settle in and watch that movie and be taken on a roller coaster through laughter, tears, wisdom and surprises. I would emerge from the darkness after the movie finished with feelings of 'okay, I have watched it'or 'the effects were too fake and obvious' and I usually don't go back to see it.
I come back home and sit down at the computer and check my score on DPC, read some funnies in the forums, learn about a new piece of technology or a new style, answer a few 'help' questions and think how I am going to shoot for the next challenge. And yet I have been on this site for 5 years and day in, day out, I still come on here and find something new and interesting. I paid $25 to join this site for a year...and I have continued to pay my $25 each year since. If I didn't pay I would still learn, but I would be limited to the knowledge available, as well as the number of challenges I can enter, which are learning curves in themselves.
So I am saying Merry Christmas to myself, for choosing to buy myself a movie ticket to a movie that lasts me a whole year and never stops giving. Where else can I get that in this world?
So people.....think about why you are here and what you have already learnt, maybe without even realising it, and then compare the money spent to other areas of your life....and see if you can see why this site is such a draw card.
AND HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Did Langdon go public? How many shares did you buy Judi? You would make a good PR person. :) |

What are pods? I'm not sure it sounds like something I'd want to eat! LOL! Apparently my learning curve here is on the downswing, because my pictures seem to score worse and worse each challenge I enter. Can you package some of your fairy magic and send it my way please?
And a very Merry Christmas to you too! |

Pods are yummy...like a tiny biscuit case filled with either Bounty, Snickers, Mars Bars or other yummy fillings. They are only about 2cm wide and moorish.
Here is a link to the UK product. I can't find an Aussie link.

Woot woot those look yum yummy. Wish we had those in the U.S. Maybe we do but I've never seen them. They'd be worth the extra pounds. |

Man, I feel like I must be missing out on some aspect of DPC. Is there a dead-only member's section of the forums I can't view?

Hm. I'll have to remember that. I've never tried consuming the quicker-picker-upper, but my dog seems to love them.
On a more serious note, I totally agree with what you're saying Judi. It's a great investment of a small amount of money, that goes pretty far. It gives you everything from hair pulling frustration in Rant to edge-of-your-seat excitement before rollover, to the sad, sad grip of tragedy by giving you a first hand glimpse of addiction via the update button.

the food/extras are the only way (practically) that theaters make their money. Every time a movie comes out, the studio negotiates a percentage to take from the gate, depending on how well they predict the movie will do or how popular it will be and they basically shaft the theaters. Case in point: When Lord of the rings came out in theaters, the studios took 99.5% of the gate, and the rest went to the theater. Basically, they knew that for a studio not to play LOTR would be stupid on their part and near suicidal so they bend over for the percentage.
The average Hollywood movie takes anywhere from 70-95% (they have higher overheads), with indie films taking maybe 30-40% to encourage theaters to play them as they keep up to 70% of gates.
so, that's why popcorn, coke, M&Ms cost like they do in theaters- its the only way to turn a profit consistently... well, that and the ads before the movie. |
