I would'nt vote down an entry due to composition. You can't get a wild bird to take direction as snaffles said. You can only put yourself in the best position as possible, and sometimes that tough to do,depending on your surroundings. I tend vote BIF"s higher,as they are tougher to get. |

I think it will be difficult for voters to consider a bird in flight a portrait rather than an action shot. I don't intend to vote these images down without a good look, I suspect there will be a few birds in flight that I will consider an environmental portrait. |

I agree. I spent several hours in a blind with wind chills hovering around zero, took over a hundred photos and had only three or four images that really could be considered contenders. They never seem to do what you want them to, or if they do, it's only for a second and then they're gone. |

Anyone want to quickly help choose between two entries? (please)
Give me an idea how you would like to do it.. (E-mail?)
Thanks!

Wasn't expecting to see this when I was out looking for birds...
Having said that, I'm a little confused as to why a bird in flight wouldn't be a portrait? I've been looking online for definititions (found this interesting thread which didn't really help) and I didn't see any reference to the subject needing to be stationary.

Well why would you "worry" about it when you've already predicted a middle of the road score for yours. ;-)

Unless you mean you're not going to worry about it while casting your votes? |
I'm only entering on principle, after the recent threads I figured I better enter this challenge. No one said I was going to vote. Usually don't in challenges I enter. Actually don't vote much at all any more.

I'm in. I had a a fine tight head shot, with a dark water BG, but chose one with the bird in it's environment instead. I figured that the head shot would get trashed for not showing "natural habitat". I actually went out of my way to get bird shots for about 45 minutes one day on the way to work.

Not to mention if they see you they always fly AWAY from you so all you get is bird ass in your lens. I thoroughly enjoyed this week's challenge and probably put a total of 6-8 hours getting my shot.
Here's a totally unrelated outtake. I like it for an abstract. I'll tell you these little swallows were REALLY hard to shoot.

That's funny. I have way too many bird ass shots from yesterday's shoot. :o)
I was out for about 3 hours and came to the conclusion that I REALLY want the 100-400 lens. Maybe next year... |

You just have to be driving faster than the bird is flying.

Would like to have used this one, but that would have been good for an instant DQ for being out of date.
Also, not exactly a wild bird is it? I did think about going and trying to redo this shot... I'll probably be sorry I didn't ;)
