Speaking of rules....
I've not been voting because I do have an entry... Although it looks like quite a few people do vote even if they have an entry.
So, should a person vote in the challenges they've entered? (obviously with a nod to fair play).

There's no rule. It's really a matter of personal choice. Although I do vote in all the challenges, whether or not I have an entry I believe that if one enters a challenge he/she must participate in the voting process.(with a nod to fair play)

Sure - when I have time, I vote on all of 'em.
I frequently learn something from the ones that are 'better' than mine in the Challenge I'm entered in.

| I always (well almost always) vote on all challenges, ones I've entered and ones that I haven't...and I try to take a chunk out of the comments as well...IMO I feel that if I can participate in the challenges I can vote and comment on them...mind you I make a muckety moooo mess sometimes...but that is all in the learning curve... |

probably going to curse my self again with this...but this thread needs to get back on track...I sure did like it the best when I went to bed on the first night and it was at 6.9091...man that was down right pretty...then it's back to the real world...today it's been holding steady, not leap or bounds but not going down...YET

I'm guessing there are about five dozen references to this in different threads, most recently in the "bug" challenge thread.
I personally was NOT voting in challenges I entered, felt like it was a "conflict of interest" of sorts.
After some back and forth I was kindly shown how that is almost a selfish attitude, as we enter challenges looking for votes, we should be at least willing to give votes where we expect them.
Bottom line is, it's a matter of personal choice, but if you can manage to be objective when voting then the best bet may be to vote in as many challenges as possible. We do love GETTING the votes, don't we?
(side note, I'm currently earning a 4.2x in this challenge and voted an average of 5.8, so far so good remaining objective...)

I vote in every challenge, whether I participate or not.
The challenges in which I participate, I "forget" I'm participating and I vote in a, in my opinion, fair way.
I don't see e.g. the use in voting low for every other photograph. The difference on all votes together would be to neglect.
To be honest, I would be the first to vote pro if a real rule like "scores of 3 and lower MUST be accompanied with a comment explaining the reason why" would come up.

| Score is dropping a bit but with 35 comments I am well above my highest comment level ever. By about 5 times actually! Shame most of them are only one or two words, but there are some crackers. :o) |
