OK I have a dilema. As many know, I had a hard drive failure. My original file for the POV challenge was on that drive. I 'moved' it from my CF card to the hard drive that failed. I have two options at this point for recovering my file.

One: take the hard drive in for data recovery. This is the most expensive and most wanted option as I'll get all the other photos from the drive. AT this point, I don't know how much this will cost.

Two: Photorecovery will recover the originals from my CF card. However, I don't want to spend the 29 bucks for the program if I'm gonna have to pay more for the hard drive recovery...

My question. The photo's still on the card were taken BEFORE the images that I moved to hard drive (I left directory 120cannon on the card and moved everything from 121cannon to the hard drive. At this point if I move 120cannon to another hard drive, can I take some pics without writing over the files that are at this point recoverable?

The reason I ask... There's a cool moon out with a slight cloud cover behind the pine trees and I SOOOOOOO wanna shoot them...

Do you have access to another pc? If so, you can check out this information from a previous forum post:
//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=58805

It has a link to this program:
//download.com.com/3000-2242-10066144.html

The progam will allow you to recover files that have even been deleted from your cf card as long as you havent taken any photos since.

I personally wouldnt take any photos with that cf card until you have recovered the files you want.

Hope this helps.

Sorry about the card, thanx for the tip about the moon.

I would not take any pictures on that card. My understanding is that CF uses the same FAT32 file system that windows/dos does, wide open space with a table of contents. If you was to take a picture, there is no telling where it physically gets written to the card.

This is what I have seen RE: Data Recovery and CF Cards

First Shoot Images - 1 - 100

Format drive

2nd Shoot Images 1-50 (only shot 50), but deleted images during shoot. So say, Image 26 didn't look good, I deleted and shot 27, 28, etc. Image 27, became image 26, 27,etc.

Drive Recovery.

Images 51-100 from the first shoot were present upon recovery.
Images 1-50 were present from 2nd Shoot upon recovery.

Image 26, deleted during 2nd shoot, was not. I think the writing is linear, but I wouldn't put any of my own money on that.

You shoot on the card, you will be erasing images when things are overwritten.

I hope that helps.

I love a positive outcome! Good luck on the HDD recovery.

With reference to DJLuba's test, your results are what I would expect for a newly-reformatted card. Files should get written "in order". If, however, the card has not been reformatted in a long time, it get's "fragmented" just like a hard drive, and then there is no telling how things will be written.

I'm glad I could help... I had a similar issue a while back and that program was able to recover everything.
