So what is the FSM? I read the rules, but I didn't see an explanation of the basic idea behind this.

The FSM is a side challenge that is aimed at motivating members to enter each monthly free study challenge. It may seem easy entering twelve consecutive monthly free studies but in actuality it's not; even more challenging trying to keep your FSM average higher than your beginning of the year average. This is the reason it is called a Marathon.

Here an overview and I will link you to the point system page for more in-depth information.

1. The most important thing is to enter every monthly free study or as many as possible.
2. Enter an image that will score well because you earn monthly points based on your percentile among other FSM participants.
3. Try to score above your beginning average each month to earn I-points (improvement points).
4. At the end of the marathon (year) the User with the most FSM points will become the FSM Champion for that year.

The FSM is not about scores as much as it is about participation and what you may learn by pushing yourself month-after-month. You could score well 11 out of 12 months, missing one month and drop out of the top 10, 20, or 25.

I feel that each participant that takes on the FSM Challenge learns something valuable about photography and themselves by the time the Marathon is over. Just my Opinion but I do believe that.

Here is the link to the point system page.

I hope this help.

Thanks,
